Roblox removed classic faces from sale as it replaced them with animated Dynamic Head versions. It later expanded that change into a migration of Classic Heads and Faces to the Dynamic Head system. Roblox said the goal was to support facial expression and communication, unify its avatar system, and meet its heads policy—not to erase faces players already owned.
What happened to Roblox’s classic faces?
The change happened in stages. In June 2022, Roblox announced the full release of Dynamic Heads: mesh parts linked to facial controls and animations. In July 2023, it explained that when an animated upgrade for a classic head or face became available, the classic face decal would be removed from sale so the Marketplace offered one version to buy. Roblox said that taking an item off sale did not remove copies already in players’ inventories. Roblox’s Dynamic Heads release announcement and its 2023 heads update describe those steps.
In January 2026, Roblox announced a broader move of all Classic Heads and Faces into the Dynamic Head system. Its March 23, 2026 update said the migration was live and rolling out, and described controls for facial animation and head shape. This is the status Roblox reported; it does not establish that every account or catalog listing has changed identically.
Why did Roblox remove faces?
To add facial animation
Roblox’s 2023 explanation focused on expression. The company said it wanted avatars to communicate and express themselves in a way that feels authentic and natural. Once an animated counterpart was available, Roblox chose to stop selling the equivalent classic decal rather than maintain two versions of the same face in the Marketplace.

To unify its avatar system
In 2026, Roblox described the transition as part of aligning avatars around a unified schema, which it said would help deliver future capabilities for users and creators. The company also said static classic heads and faces did not meet its updated heads policy’s cage-region and animation requirements, so it was converting them into Dynamic Heads. Those are Roblox’s stated reasons for the migration.
Roblox had already made Dynamic Heads available to developers in 2022 for use in live experiences, including with avatars and non-player characters. Did Roblox delete my classic face?
Taking a face off sale is different from removing it from an owner’s inventory. Roblox explicitly said in 2023 that the Marketplace change would not affect faces people already owned. Its 2026 migration describes legacy assets being redirected to Dynamic Head equivalents, rather than saying owners lose the item.
Roblox’s stated aim is for converted heads to preserve the look of classic combinations, but the migration update also acknowledged ongoing work and invited reports about appearance, compatibility, and usability. That means it is not safe to assume every conversion looks identical in every use or that all issues have been resolved. For a particular item, check the current catalog entry and your avatar editor.

Can I turn off Roblox face animation?
Roblox’s March 23, 2026 update described a control to turn facial animation off. With animation off, the head is locked to an expression matching the original classic face. The update also described controls for switching among head shapes you own. These controls address the appearance of converted heads; they do not restore a removed Marketplace listing or make a face available for purchase again.
Why are classic faces now called heads?
The naming reflects the system Roblox is moving them into. A classic face was a static decal worn on a head; a Dynamic Head is a head asset that can use facial controls and animation. Roblox’s policy and migration treat heads as a unified category, so familiar face designs may now appear as part of a Dynamic Head rather than as standalone face decals. The underlying goal, according to Roblox, is one avatar-head system that supports both its policy requirements and future features.

What the change means for buyers and owners
- If you already owned a classic face: Roblox said the 2023 off-sale change did not remove it from your inventory.
- If you wanted to buy one: Roblox’s 2023 policy removed the classic decal from sale when its animated counterpart was available; an off-sale item may no longer be purchasable through the Marketplace.
- If you prefer a still expression: Roblox’s 2026 update described an animation-off option that locks the expression to match the original classic face.
- If the converted appearance seems different: Roblox described visual parity as a goal, not a guarantee that every item or situation is already identical. Its migration post invites reports about aesthetics, compatibility, and usability.
