The game’s team announced that support and updates were ending immediately and that its servers would close on June 30, 2023. The notice explained what players would lose, but not the company’s reason for closing the game. The shutdown happened amid JumpStart’s wider closure; that context does not establish a specific cause.
What happened to School of Dragons?
The team’s shutdown notice said it was ending support, would release no further downloads, content, or functionality updates, and would close the game’s servers on June 30, 2023. It also said player progress and in-game items would not be saved, and user data would be unavailable after the shutdown. The notice is reproduced on TapTap.
Ryan Batcheller, identified in his LinkedIn post as the game’s art lead, also said the servers would close on June 30. His post corroborates the date; it does not explain the decision.
Was the shutdown caused by JumpStart’s closure?
School of Dragons’ closure coincided with JumpStart’s wider shutdown. A contemporaneous Jellyneo report described JumpStart’s closure as corporate restructuring and noted that it had found no official statement explaining the closure. This is relevant context, but it does not confirm why School of Dragons specifically was closed.

Did a lawsuit or an expired DreamWorks license cause it?
Neither explanation is established by the available sources. Community discussion blamed a Neopets data-breach lawsuit or the game’s DreamWorks license, but the shutdown notice named neither as a reason. Without stronger evidence, both should be treated as unverified theories, not facts.
What was School of Dragons?
JumpStart announced the game in 2013 as an educational multiplayer online game based on DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Its launch announcement described activities intended to introduce scientific-method concepts through earth, life, and physical sciences (JumpStart’s 2013 announcement).
