There is no universal 24-hour YouTube rule in its published guidance that automatically ends every livestream. The documented 12-hour threshold concerns whether YouTube captures an archive—not a scheduled shutdown of the live feed. If a church’s broadcast stopped after about a day, check the Live Control Room, encoder logs, connection records, and any copyright or policy notices to find the cause.
First identify what “ended” means
A long broadcast can appear to end for three different reasons: the live feed stopped, the replay is missing or incomplete, or viewers can no longer rewind to earlier parts. YouTube documents distinct limitations for archives and DVR on long streams, so those symptoms should not be treated as interchangeable.
- The live feed stopped: investigate the event’s Live Control Room errors, encoder output, network, power, and policy notices.
- The replay is missing or truncated: this may be an archive limitation, not evidence the live feed was shut down.
- Rewind no longer reaches earlier content: this may be a DVR limitation even while the stream remains live.
What YouTube documents about long streams
Archive capture: 12 hours
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is a warning about preserving the replay; it does not establish a 24-hour live-stream cutoff. Do not rely on YouTube to retain a complete archive of a stream longer than 12 hours. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
DVR rewind: also limited on very long streams
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. YouTube warns that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. A viewer who cannot rewind to the beginning may therefore be seeing a DVR limitation, not a stopped broadcast. YouTube Help: Use Live chat and Live Control Room

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A 24-hour creation limit is not a 24-hour duration limit
YouTube’s error guidance describes a limit on how many live streams a channel can create in a 24-hour period. That concerns creating events; it is not stated as a maximum runtime for one continuous stream. Check the error message itself rather than assuming the channel hit a duration timer. YouTube Help: Live stream error messages
Why the live feed itself may have stopped
Encoder or connection failure
Live Control Room displays stream errors next to the health indicator, with timestamps. Its error guidance includes an incorrect stream format, such as using a format other than H.264 video and AAC audio. YouTube also warns that a connection disruption can break a stream. Correlate the dashboard timestamp with encoder output, internet-upload or power interruptions, and the local recording. YouTube Help: Live stream error messages YouTube Help: Streaming tips

Copyright or policy enforcement
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including other copyrighted live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn the broadcaster; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also terminate a stream. Check Studio for notices rather than concluding that a sermon broadcast was stopped for a technical reason. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
A church’s use of a song does not by itself prove that copyright enforcement caused the interruption. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Even licensed third-party material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID; confirm rights and any required allowlisting with the rights holder. Diagnose the next interruption step by step
- Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Record the health indicator, every error message, and its timestamp. Errors and timestamps can help distinguish an encoder issue from a platform or policy notice. YouTube Help: Live stream error messages
- Classify the symptom. Establish whether the live event ended, the archive is absent or incomplete, or DVR rewind stopped reaching earlier portions. Apply the separate archive and DVR guidance accordingly. Archive live streams Live chat and Live Control Room
- Inspect encoder configuration and logs. Verify the YouTube server URL and stream key, the encoder’s output format, and whether it stopped sending. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers entering the server URL and stream key; stop sending content when intentionally ending the stream. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Check connection, failover, and power records. Match the error time to internet-upload interruptions, network failover, encoder restart, or power loss. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover rather than waiting for a live event to discover it does not work. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Review Studio notices and music permissions. Look for copyright or Community Guidelines notices. If the service included third-party music, verify that the church has the necessary rights and that any required Content ID allowlisting is in place with the rights holder. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
- Record locally and verify the file. Keep a local recording alongside the stream and confirm that the file is intact and growing while the service is underway. This gives the church a separate copy if the live feed fails or YouTube does not capture a long archive. YouTube Help: Streaming tips YouTube Help: Archive live streams
How to reduce the risk during future services
- Test the full encoder setup, stream key, preview, audio, and video before the service begins; monitor stream health while it is live. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Plan and test a backup encoder or other failover path if the broadcast must continue through an equipment failure. A failover test is preparation, not proof that any particular prior interruption was caused by the encoder. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Keep a local recording and check that it is being written correctly during the broadcast. Do not treat a YouTube replay as the only copy for a stream exceeding 12 hours. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
- Confirm music rights and any Content ID allowlisting before using third-party material in a live service. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but buying one is not a diagnosis or a guarantee against long-stream interruption. The relevant cause still has to be established from the event’s errors, equipment records, and connection history. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
