Installing a game on a new phone does not automatically move its save. The game must have backed up progress to a supported platform or publisher account, and the new phone usually needs to use that same account. If the save existed only on the old phone—or the game does not support the service you relied on—it may not appear on the replacement device.
Why game progress may be missing
A save can be stored in different places: on the phone itself, through a platform service such as Google Play Games or Apple’s iCloud/Game Center, or in the game publisher’s own account system. Installing the same game does not establish that its save was backed up. Google Play Help says, “Not all games automatically save your progress.” Google also notes that some games autosave when you are signed in with the Google Play Games Mobile App (Google Play Help).
Apple’s guidance is similarly limited to compatible titles: “On supported games, you can use iCloud and Game Center to keep your progress, high scores and game saves up to date across your devices” (Apple Support). A Game Center sign-in alone does not prove that a particular game uploaded its save.
If you played as a guest or never linked the game to an account, progress may have been stored only on the old phone. EA explains that an unlinked guest save has no backup beyond the device and may not be recoverable if the device or app is lost (EA Help).

First, protect any copy that may still exist
If the old phone is available and the game still opens, keep the device and installation intact. Before logging out, deleting the app, or starting a transfer, open the game’s account, cloud-save, or transfer settings and check what account is linked and whether the save is connected. A guest save may be the only remaining copy.
Do not uninstall and reinstall the game unless you have confirmed that the save is linked or backed up. EA recommends reinstalling only for a game backed up to a linked account and says to skip that step if you are unsure.

Check the account for your phone type
Android to Android
- In the Google Play Store, open the game’s listing and look for an indication that it uses Google Play Games.
- Open the game and check its achievements or leaderboards to see which Google Play Games profile is active. Confirm it is the account used on the old phone.
- On the new phone, sign in to that same account and reopen the game. If the title supports Play Games saves, allow it to sync.
- If progress is still missing, check the game’s own account settings and contact its developer. Google says it does not manage in-app data or game accounts.
iPhone to iPhone or another Apple device
Check that the same Apple Account is signed in to iCloud and Game Center on both devices. Then open the game and check its own account or save settings. This route applies only if the game supports iCloud or Game Center saving and the old save was actually linked or synced.
If you switched between Android and iPhone
Do not assume a Google Play Games save will open through Game Center, or that a Game Center save will appear in Google Play Games. Cross-platform transfer depends on the specific game. A publisher may offer its own account, require a transfer code or support request, or provide no transfer route.

- Publisher account: KONAMI’s eBASEBALL: MLB PRO SPIRIT instructions require a KONAMI ID for transfers between operating systems and describe a final transfer confirmation (KONAMI instructions).
- Game-specific transfer flow: SEGA’s Sonic Forces instructions describe a Link Devices process for cross-platform transfers. The transfer is permanent and irreversible, and SEGA warns players not to share the link code. That procedure applies to Sonic Forces, not all SEGA games (SEGA Support).
- Limited availability: Storm8 says its Cloud Account feature is available only in listed games. Its support guidance explains that a Game Center-linked save cannot be accessed on Android without the publisher’s transfer route (Storm8 Support).
Follow the current instructions from the game’s official support page before confirming an irreversible transfer. Treat transfer codes as credentials: enter them only in the game’s official flow, and do not post or send them to strangers.

- Confirm the exact game title and publisher, and identify the old and new phone platforms.
- Check the game’s official help page to establish whether it supports Google Play Games, iCloud/Game Center, or a publisher account or transfer feature.
- On the new phone, verify that the relevant platform or publisher account is the same one used for the old save.
- Try the publisher’s documented, non-destructive steps. Depending on the game, these may include updating or restarting it, signing out and back in, or manually signing into the linked account.
- If the save remains missing, contact the game’s developer or publisher through its official support channel. Provide player IDs or proof of ownership only as requested there; Google does not handle game-account data.
Sync timing can also differ by game. For example, DECA says switching devices for its supported Android progress may take several minutes and recommends restarting the game to help sync. That is a publisher-specific example, not a universal waiting period (DECA Support).

What if the old phone is lost or wiped?
Recovery depends on whether the game had already uploaded or linked the save. Try signing in on the new phone with the same platform or publisher account, then follow the game’s official recovery steps. If the save was an unlinked guest save stored only on the old device, there may be no copy to restore; the publisher is the appropriate place to ask whether any recovery option exists.
