AAA games can cost more because they often require large teams, long development schedules, extensive outside services, launch marketing, and—when they continue online—years of infrastructure, content, and player support. A higher retail price contributes to a publisher’s return, but it does not correspond to a fixed feature or reveal what any one game cost to make.
What makes AAA game production expensive?
Large productions bring together many kinds of work: game design, programming, art, animation, audio, testing, production management, and more. Long schedules mean those teams and their supporting operations incur costs over time. Studios may also hire external developers and contractors or pay for platform software and other services.
Electronic Arts describes its research and development expenses as including production-studio personnel and overhead, external development, contracted services, depreciation, and related costs. Its FY2026 Form 10-K reported company-wide R&D expense of $2.828 billion, 10% higher than FY2025, with the increase mainly attributed to personnel costs, studio contracted services, and digital infrastructure. This is an EA-wide figure, not the budget for one game. EA FY2026 Form 10-K
Budgets have risen in aggregate, but that does not mean every title costs more by the same amount. Boston Consulting Group reported that PC and console AAA budgets grew at a 6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2017 through 2022. It forecast an 8% CAGR from 2022 through 2028; that figure is a forecast, not an observed result or a prediction for each game. Boston Consulting Group, 2024

How much of the expense is marketing rather than development?
Development and marketing are separate expense categories. Marketing covers advertising, promotion, and the staff and overhead that support those activities; a major launch can require a substantial campaign alongside the work of making the game.
EA defines marketing and sales expenses to include advertising, marketing and promotion, personnel-related costs, and overhead. The company reported $1.128 billion in marketing and sales expense for FY2026, up 17% from FY2025, mainly because of advertising and marketing for Battlefield 6. That is a company-wide annual figure, not the marketing bill for Battlefield 6 alone. EA FY2026 Form 10-K

Why can costs continue after a game launches?
A game that is primarily a one-time purchase has a different cost profile from a live-service game that is regularly updated. Online games may need data centers, matchmaking, operations, community engagement, and player support. New content and ongoing service work can extend those costs well beyond launch. Boston Consulting Group describes live-service games as requiring longer development and continued investment in those areas. Boston Consulting Group, 2024
How does a retail price fit into a game’s revenue model?
The upfront purchase is only one possible source of revenue. Games may also earn through subscriptions, microtransactions, and optional extra content. Some games have no upfront price and instead rely on services and additional content; EA says live-service revenue is material to its business. The European Parliament’s study of the video game sector also identifies digital sales, microtransactions, and subscriptions among current business models. That means a higher sticker price cannot be read as a direct bill for a specific feature, nor does it show the full revenue plan. The available figures do not establish that a particular $70 or $80 price point was caused by one game’s budget.

Digital and physical sales have different distribution costs. EA says selling digitally generally costs less than using traditional retail and distribution channels. It estimated that 73% of its Xbox and PlayStation units sold in FY2024 were digital. That estimate applies to EA’s own sales on those platforms, not to the whole industry. EA FY2024 Form 10-Q

What a higher price does—and does not—tell you
- It can contribute to revenue: a premium purchase helps fund a publisher’s return, alongside other revenue sources where applicable.
- It does not disclose a title’s budget: publishers’ aggregate expense reports combine costs across games and operations, and individual AAA budgets are often confidential.
- It does not guarantee a particular level of value: production scope and ongoing support vary by game, and price alone does not tell you what features or service a player will receive.
