The best MacBook Neo alternative depends on the operating system and apps you need—not a single review score. For Windows, compare the Dell XPS 13 (2026) if you qualify for its cited student pricing, or the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 if you do not. For ChromeOS, consider the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024), but its cited $700 base MSRP makes it a sub-$600 choice only when discounted. The HP OmniBook 5 is another Windows option, though its reported starting price is higher and some configurations were not yet scheduled to ship when reported.

What the MacBook Neo offers—and what to weigh against it

Apple announced the MacBook Neo in March 2026. Its base configuration has an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. The 13-inch Liquid Retina display has a 2408 × 1506 resolution and 500-nit brightness. It has two USB-C ports with different USB speeds; external-display support is available through the USB 3 port. Apple lists Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo finishes. Check Apple’s store for the current configuration and price in your region. Apple’s MacBook Neo announcement

The fixed 8GB of memory is central to the comparison. RTINGS considers it adequate for typical schoolwork and light multitasking on macOS, but warns that 8GB can limit heavier multitasking on Windows 11. It describes the Neo as suitable for browsing, streaming, word processing and very light creative work, rather than intensive workloads. RTINGS’ MacBook Neo review RTINGS’ workload assessment

Apple’s performance and battery comparisons are manufacturer results, not independent tests. Apple says its performance testing used preproduction Neo systems and production Intel Core Ultra 5 PCs in January and February 2026, with specified software and configurations. Its battery tests used preproduction systems in January 2026 under controlled brightness and usage conditions. Actual battery life varies with use and configuration. Apple’s test details

MacBook Neo alternatives by operating system and budget

Laptop Best fit Price reference What to check
Dell XPS 13 (2026) Windows users prioritizing portability RTINGS lists it around $599 with eligible student pricing; this is not a universal price. Confirm student eligibility, the exact configuration and the current offer. RTINGS describes it as portable with strong battery life.
ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 Windows users who do not qualify for student pricing RTINGS lists $599 in its 2026 guide as a price not requiring special pricing. Compare the exact listing’s memory, storage, display and portability with the Neo.
Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) People who need ChromeOS, including in a school-managed environment RTINGS cites a $700 base MSRP, though it says the model is often on sale. At list price it is not a reliable under-$600 pick. RTINGS notes a compact design, day-long battery, FHD+ display and 1440p webcam.
HP OmniBook 5 (14-inch, 2026) Windows shoppers specifically seeking a 14-inch OLED display Tom’s Hardware reports a $699.99 starting price. The report describes 1920 × 1200 OLED configurations and planned memory and storage options. Some configurations were scheduled for November 2026 or March 2027, so verify what has shipped.

These are source-attributed reference prices, not live quotes. Student pricing, sales, configuration and stock can change by retailer and region. The HP’s reported starting price is above the Neo’s historic U.S. launch price; check current prices before comparing checkout totals. RTINGS’ laptop picks Tom’s Hardware’s HP OmniBook 5 report

How to choose the right alternative

  1. Start with the operating system and required apps. List any Windows-only software, macOS-specific tools or ChromeOS school requirements. A required application or managed-device policy can matter more than a general review recommendation.
  2. Compare the actual checkout price. Check whether a displayed price requires student eligibility, and distinguish a temporary sale from a regular listed price. Compare equivalent memory and storage configurations rather than entry prices alone.
  3. Match memory and storage to your workload. Do not assume 8GB on a Windows laptop provides the same practical headroom as 8GB on the Neo. RTINGS specifically cautions about heavier Windows 11 multitasking with 8GB. Check the exact configuration’s capacity and whether it can be upgraded before buying. RTINGS’ memory assessment
  4. Be realistic about demanding work. For documents, browser tabs, video and ordinary school tasks, several of these laptops may fit. Frequent video editing, development or heavy multitasking calls for a more capable configuration; expect to compare higher-cost models rather than assume a budget pick will suit it. RTINGS’ workload guidance
  5. Compare the details you will use every day. Check display size and quality, ports, keyboard, webcam and portability in the exact listing. Treat battery-life claims according to their test method; where possible, compare independent tests conducted under a consistent methodology.

What benchmark figures can—and cannot—tell you

Tom’s Guide reports SSD read/write results of 1,585/1,440 MB/s for its tested MacBook Neo, 3,018/3,456 MB/s for its tested Dell and 6,701/6,891 MB/s for its tested ASUS. These figures apply to those specific tested configurations, not every version of each model. They are most relevant to large file transfers; SSD speed alone does not rank overall laptop quality or establish how well a machine suits your apps. Tom’s Guide’s tested comparison

There is no neutral, comprehensive common benchmark ranking across all the alternatives listed here. RTINGS’ picks, Tom’s Guide’s storage tests and Apple’s manufacturer comparisons use different methods, so they should not be combined into a single league table.
