Endermen get angry because Minecraft uses direct eye contact as a hostility trigger. The game’s official descriptions say an Enderman reacts when a player looks directly at its face; they do not give a canonical in-world reason for the behavior.
What happens when you look at an Enderman?
Minecraft’s official Bedrock Creator documentation summarizes the rule: Endermen are “only hostile when looked at directly.” Minecraft.net describes the reaction in more detail: an Enderman starts screaming and shaking, then teleports toward and attacks the player after the player looks away. These are descriptions of the game mechanic, not an explanation of what the creature thinks or why it behaves that way.
The wording matters: Minecraft.net specifies looking directly at the Enderman’s face. The official descriptions do not establish that simply being nearby, facing generally toward one, or seeing it on screen will always trigger hostility.
How can you look at an Enderman without making it attack?
Avoid looking directly at its face if you want to keep it from becoming hostile. As an alternative, the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki’s combat tutorial says that wearing a carved pumpkin on your head prevents the look-triggered hostility. Treat this as gameplay guidance from the wiki, rather than an official developer explanation.

Is there a lore reason Endermen hate eye contact?
No official in-world motive is established in the cited descriptions. Minecraft’s Monstrous Compendium describes an Enderman becoming enraged when a humanoid looks directly at it, opening its mouth and rushing to attack, but that is atmospheric description—not a stated reason for the behavior. Ideas that Endermen are shy, protective, or offended by eye contact are fan interpretations, not confirmed explanations.
Does the rule work the same in every Minecraft version?
Microsoft’s concise behavior summary is specifically from Bedrock Creator documentation, while Minecraft.net gives a general description of Endermen. These sources do not establish that exact trigger conditions are identical in every edition and version. They also do not specify an aiming threshold, distance, line-of-sight rule, or delay, so there is no supported exact range or timing to give here.
