Why Won’t My Hopper Feed Into the Chest?

A Minecraft hopper only pushes items out of its spout, and a redstone signal locks it completely. Here is how to check both and connect a hopper to a chest correctly.

Usually the hopper is pointing the wrong way, or it is receiving a redstone signal that has locked it. Check the hopper’s outlet first, then check for redstone power, and only then look at the chest.

Check the hopper’s outlet direction

A hopper pushes items only in the direction its spout faces. If the spout points at a wall, a furnace, or another block, the items go there instead of into your chest. The spout is the narrow stem on the hopper’s front, and it shows the output direction at a glance.

Place the hopper so it faces the chest

There are two valid layouts, and the way you place the hopper determines which one you get.

Hopper position How it was placed Where its items go
Directly above the chest Placed normally, with the chest in the block below Down into the chest
Against the side of the chest Sneak while placing (hold Shift) so the spout points at the chest Sideways into the chest
Against the side of the chest Placed normally, without sneaking Down, into whatever block sits below the hopper, not the chest

The third row explains most failed side connections. A hopper placed against a chest’s side without sneaking points down, so the chest never receives anything. The official Minecraft article “Block of the Month: Hopper” by Duncan Geere, published April 12, 2025, describes the downward transfer and the sneak-to-attach behavior for side connections.

Check for redstone power

A powered hopper is locked. It stops collecting, pulling, and pushing items until the signal is removed. The same Minecraft article states: “A locked hopper will not collect, pull, or push any items until the redstone signal is turned off again.” Look for a nearby redstone dust line, a lever, a button, a torch, or a powered block touching the hopper. Temporarily break or disconnect that source and watch whether items start moving again.

  • Items sit inside the hopper: the problem is on the output side. Recheck the spout direction, the chest position, and whether the hopper is locked by redstone.
  • Items never enter the hopper: the problem is on the input side, above the hopper. Confirm that items are actually dropping into it, or that the source container is connected and holding items.
  • Items reach the chest but the chest looks unchanged: check that you are looking at the correct chest, especially if more than one is nearby.

Fix the layout step by step

  1. Break the hopper and check that the chest is in the block the hopper will face.
  2. To feed the chest from above, place the hopper directly on top of it without sneaking.
  3. To feed the chest from the side, stand so you are aiming at the chest’s side face, hold Shift, and place the hopper against it. Then confirm the spout points at the chest.
  4. Remove any redstone power that reaches the hopper.
  5. Drop a test item into the hopper and watch whether it moves into the chest.

Version notes

The behavior described here comes from Minecraft’s official hopper article and the general hopper rules that apply across the game. The sources reviewed do not document version-by-version differences between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, so if your results do not match these steps, check the game version you are running against the current official Minecraft documentation.

Hoppers are game blocks, so you fix them by repositioning or disconnecting them inside Minecraft. No real-world tools or replacement parts are involved.
