A white screen when you open Pokémon GO has no single confirmed cause that official sources identify. It usually points to a loading or app problem, and Niantic’s documented troubleshooting steps are the right place to start. None of them is guaranteed to fix every case, so work through them in order and note what changes after each one.
What the official guidance covers
Niantic’s Android and iOS troubleshooting guides address general app problems rather than this exact symptom. Neither guide diagnoses a white screen on tap or launch, and neither promises a fix for it. The steps below are the ones Niantic and Pokémon Support describe for crashes, loading failures, and connection trouble, applied to a blank screen.
Step-by-step fixes, in order
1. Update Pokémon GO from the official app store
Niantic says the game works best on the newest version of the app. Open the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android, search for Pokémon GO, and tap Update if it is offered. An outdated build is a common reason a screen fails to draw after launch, so this is the first thing to rule out.
2. Check the connection, then switch it
Confirm that the phone has a reliable connection. If you are on Wi-Fi and the connection is unstable, try mobile data. If mobile data is weak, switch back to Wi-Fi. Changing networks is a quick test: if the white screen disappears on one network and returns on the other, the connection is part of the problem.

3. Refresh game data, if the app opens far enough
If the app reaches the Settings menu, go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Refresh Game Data. Niantic says this may resolve a range of gameplay issues. It can also turn Adventure Sync off, so check that setting once the game reloads.
4. Confirm automatic date and time
Niantic lists automatic system time among its general troubleshooting checks on both platforms. Turn on automatic date and time in your phone’s system settings and restart the app. An incorrect clock can interfere with sign-in and session handling, which can leave the screen stuck.
5. Apply the platform-specific steps

On Android, clear the cache from the phone’s app info screen for Pokémon GO rather than deleting the app. On iOS, clearing Safari website data affects only browser data and not the game, so it is a low-risk check when the problem involves web-based sign-in or connectivity.
6. Reinstall only from the official store
Niantic states that game progress is stored online and is not lost when you reinstall. Before you delete the app, make sure you can access the account you use to sign in, including its password or linked sign-in method. Reinstall only from the App Store or Google Play, not from third-party download sites.
7. Check device compatibility and performance
Pokémon Support advises closing other open apps and using the latest operating system available when the game crashes or lags frequently. Its compatibility FAQ also states: “Functionality is not guaranteed for devices running beta versions of iOS or Android.” If you run a beta OS, moving to the public release is a reasonable test. Device support requirements can change, so check the current supported-device guidance for your exact phone model before assuming it is incompatible.

8. Report a problem that persists
If the white screen continues after these steps, check Niantic’s known-issues results first. If your problem is not listed, report it through the in-app support option. The report can include details such as your app version and device model, which help Niantic investigate.
What is established and what is not
Niantic’s guidance does not identify a cause for a white screen on tap, and nothing in its published troubleshooting steps confirms how often this symptom occurs. Your phone model, operating system version, Pokémon GO version, account state, network, and the exact timing of the blank screen all affect which step matters. A blank screen that appears immediately is a different situation from one that appears after the title screen or a menu has loaded.

One community post describes a blank white screen after launch, even though the map and menus loaded at first. The poster later said the screen stopped after an in-game name-change prompt appeared. That is a single anecdote. It does not show that account-name handling is a typical cause, so do not assume it applies to your account.

Niantic’s sign-in guidance warns that temporary server problems or poor connectivity can cause “failed to log in” or “unable to authenticate” messages, and it recommends checking your connection or waiting and trying again. That guidance covers sign-in errors. It does not establish that server trouble produces a white screen.

A useful report needs a few specifics. Write down the following before you contact support:
- Phone model and operating system version, including whether you run a beta OS
- Pokémon GO version from the app store listing
- Whether the screen is blank immediately on launch, or only after an intermediate screen such as the title screen or a menu
- Whether the problem changes when you switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data
- Whether the step to refresh game data was completed, and whether Adventure Sync was turned off afterward
Report it through the in-app support option, and attach these details in your description. If you prefer not to use the in-app route, check Niantic’s support channels for the current contact options.

Note that a white screen in itself does not tell you whether the problem is on your phone or on Niantic’s side. The steps above separate the two in most cases: a fix that works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data points to the connection, while a problem that survives a clean reinstall and an updated OS points to something specific to your device or account.
The white screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Work through the steps in order, record which one changes the behaviour, and use that result when you contact Niantic.
