There is no single official explanation for why every Legendary Pokémon can be caught. Pokémon’s creators leave unanswered lore questions open to fan interpretation, and each game gives its Legendary encounters a different role. A successful capture is a game event; by itself, it does not prove what the Pokémon privately wants or why it allows a trainer to catch it.
Is there an official reason Legendary Pokémon let trainers catch them?
No franchise-wide reason has been established. Pokémon Support says that questions not answered in the games, animated movies, or TV shows are meant to be left to fans’ imaginations and interpretations. That guidance means ideas such as a Legendary choosing a worthy trainer, trusting the player, or surrendering to prevent a greater danger are theories unless a particular story says so.
It is also worth treating “let you catch them” as a way of describing what happens in gameplay, not proof of consent or motive in every Pokémon continuity. The official sources do not give one universal account of what a Legendary thinks when a Poké Ball succeeds.
Why does the answer differ from game to game?
Legendary Pokémon can be rare encounters, parts of a game’s central story, or beings connected to a particular community. Their capture conditions and narrative roles therefore vary. The available official examples show different kinds of relationships rather than one rule for the whole series.

The Legendary birds in Pokémon: Let’s Go
The official Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! page describes Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres as Legendary Pokémon that are hardly ever seen. In those games, players must defeat a bird in battle before they get the opportunity to catch it. The page uses a game-specific “worthy” framing, but that does not establish that every Legendary chooses a trainer on the same basis.
Solgaleo and Lunala in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon
Nintendo’s announcement for Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon says Solgaleo and Lunala play a crucial role in the story and hold the key to the adventure. This frames them as central to those games’ plot, not simply as rare opponents waiting to be collected.

Special Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus
The official Pokémon Legends: Arceus story page describes special Pokémon that have received a mysterious blessing. Some are powerful nobles; others are said to willingly assist local people. Their encounters are key parts of the story, illustrating that powerful Pokémon can have different relationships with humans even within one game’s setting.
Do Legendary Pokémon choose their trainers?
Sometimes a particular game may suggest a bond, willingness, or a trainer’s worth. The Let’s Go page, for example, applies a “worthy” idea to its Legendary birds. But the cited sources do not establish a universal selection process in which all Legendary Pokémon consciously choose whoever catches them. Treat that as an interpretation unless the specific game’s dialogue or events support it.

Why can an ordinary trainer catch a Legendary Pokémon?
At the gameplay level, the game’s rules make capture possible once the player reaches the relevant encounter and meets its conditions. In Let’s Go, that includes defeating the Legendary bird first. In story terms, the encounter may matter because the Pokémon is connected to the adventure, as Solgaleo and Lunala are in Sun and Moon. Neither fact supplies a single explanation for why every Legendary is catchable, or establishes that any trainer could catch every one under the same circumstances.

- It establishes: the player reached a capture event allowed by that game’s mechanics and, if successful, caught the Pokémon in that game.
- It may establish: a particular story’s stated relationship between a Pokémon and people, if its dialogue or events make that explicit.
- It does not establish on its own: that all Legendary Pokémon want to be caught, that capture always proves a trainer’s worth, or that a Legendary is caught because it has been weakened.
Those broader claims should remain fan interpretations unless a specific game, film, or show supplies the explanation.
