There isn’t one reason, and a character choice does not reveal a player’s gender or motivation. Some players choose a female protagonist because she feels more representative, because they prefer her design, or because they want to role-play or try a different gender presentation. Research supports these as possible reasons people customize game avatars generally, but it does not establish why Pokémon players choose the female character or which reason is most common.
What might motivate the choice?
Representation and identification
A player may prefer a protagonist who feels more like them, or who reflects how they want to appear in the game. A 2026 peer-reviewed study by Yisong Han and Xavier Ho identifies self-identity as one theme in avatar customization. Their interviews involved 20 players from different countries who self-reported diverse genders; the study addresses games generally, not Pokémon character selection. Read the study record at Monash University.
Exploration and gender expression
Some players may choose a female avatar to try a different gender presentation or play with gender expectations in a fictional setting. Han and Ho also identify gender exploration and experimentation, as well as conforming to or subverting gender norms, among the themes in their interviews. These findings describe possible motivations, not a claim about how often Pokémon players choose the female character.
Design and role-play
A player may simply prefer a character’s look, clothing, or imagined place in the adventure. Another may treat the protagonist as someone to direct rather than as a self-insert. These are plausible individual preferences, but the available evidence does not show that female protagonists have better designs or more customization options across Pokémon games.

What the Pokémon-specific evidence does—and doesn’t—show
A 2019 study by Aqdas Malik and coauthors surveyed 1,190 Pokémon GO players about their experiences and motivations for playing. It examines gameplay motivations across age and gender groups; it does not measure why someone selects a particular avatar or protagonist. Pokémon GO is a mobile location-based game, so its findings should not be treated as evidence about character choices in the mainline role-playing games. Read the study at Springer.
Other gaming research offers context, not a Pokémon-specific answer. Quantic Foundry’s 2021 cross-genre analysis reports an association between men in its sample who preferred female characters and higher scores on its Design motivation measure. The analysis discusses multiple possible explanations and cautions that an underlying factor may be unmeasured. It cannot establish why any particular person—or Pokémon player—makes that choice. A 2004 article, “Pokémon: Exploring the Role of Gender,” is summarized in search results as reporting that fewer than half of participating children could name a female Pokémon and that children were more likely to choose a boy than a girl as a favorite trainer. That summary concerns recognition and favorite trainers, not reasons for choosing a playable female character; the full article and its methods were not verified here. View the article’s DOI record.
How to decide for yourself
If you’re choosing a protagonist, consider what you want from that playthrough rather than looking for a universal rule:

- Height: 5.5 cm.
- Dimensions: approx. 5.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 cm
- Official Japan figure
- Representation: Which character feels more like you, or more like the version of yourself you want in the adventure?
- Design: Which character’s appearance or clothing do you prefer in this particular game?
- Role-play: Which perspective fits the story you want to imagine?
- Experimentation: Would you enjoy trying a different presentation this time?
Customization varies by title, so check the options in the specific Pokémon game you’re playing rather than assuming they are the same across the franchise.

On its own, very little about a player’s identity or reason. People may choose differently across games and replays, and one selection cannot establish someone’s gender or explain their personal motivation. The most accurate answer is that players can have different reasons, while Pokémon-specific evidence has not identified a dominant one.
