Account theft can also expose a victim’s linked email and devices, so the motive is not necessarily limited to the value of a game inventory.
Why stolen Steam accounts are valuable
Virtual items can be resold or moved
Valve’s 2015 explanation of Steam trading security described stolen virtual goods as a business and said trading could help attackers pass stolen goods along. Steam also warns that buying or trading accounts encourages account thieves. That supports an economic motive, but it does not mean every stolen account is targeted for the same reason. Valve’s 2015 explanation and Steam’s account-selling guidance describe those risks.
Account access itself has value
A compromised account may provide access to games, community features, trading, and the account’s linked information. Attackers may also try to take over the associated email account, which can help them reset Steam access. Steam’s guidance makes clear that the account and its recovery channels need protection together.
How people get access to Steam accounts
Phishing and impersonation
Steam identifies phishing and social engineering as ways attackers obtain credentials. A message or interaction may pretend to come from Steam or Valve, then pressure someone to disclose a password or other account information. Steam Support representatives will never ask for your password, and Steam says support is handled exclusively through help.steampowered.com. See Steam’s account-stolen guidance.

Email compromise and reused passwords
If someone gains access to the email account linked to Steam, they may be able to use it to reset Steam access. Reusing the same password for Steam and email increases the risk that a password exposed in one place can endanger both. Steam Guard cannot compensate for an already compromised email account.
Malware and exposed Steam Guard files
Malware can capture credentials or exploit a device that is already authorized to use Steam. Steam specifically warns against sharing a Steam Guard .SSFN file. Its security guidance also notes that malware may be disguised as other programs or files, and that browser or operating-system exploits can put accounts at risk. Steam cautions that modern malware can evade common antivirus software, so a scan is an important recovery step, not proof that a device is clean. Does Steam Guard prevent account theft?
Steam Guard adds a separate confirmation layer. Depending on the action and settings, Steam may require confirmation for sign-ins, trades, and Community Market listings through the Steam Mobile app. This can make unauthorized access harder, but it is not a guarantee: a compromised email account or infected, authorized device can still undermine account security. Protect the email account and devices connected to Steam as well as the Steam password. Steam Guard’s official guidance explains how its protections work.
Who gets targeted, and how common is it?
Account theft is not necessarily a sign that someone was careless or inexperienced. In a post dated December 9, 2015, Valve said experienced players and traders could be targets, and reported that approximately 77,000 accounts were hijacked and pillaged per month at that time. That is a historical, company-reported figure—not a current rate. A current comparable prevalence figure, or a current breakdown of attackers’ motives, is not established here. Valve’s 2015 post.
What to do if your Steam account is stolen
- Scan the computer first. Steam advises scanning for viruses, keyloggers, spyware, and other malicious code before resetting the Steam password. A scan is not a guarantee that all malware has been found. Follow Steam’s account-stolen instructions.
- Secure the linked email account. Change its password, especially if it was reused on Steam or may also be compromised.
- Recover Steam through official support. Use Steam Support, not a person or link claiming to be support elsewhere. Steam says it will verify account ownership if self-recovery does not work.
- Keep credentials private. Steam says to enter your password only on official Steam websites and never share it with someone claiming to be a support representative.
Why buying or trading accounts is risky
Steam warns against buying or trading accounts: account selling is prohibited and encourages account theft. An account acquired from another person may not remain under the buyer’s control, and transactions can help create demand for stolen accounts. See Steam’s account-selling guidance.
