Telling them apart matters, because the fixes are different and because seeing a patrol does not prove an outpost is nearby. The exact spawn rules also vary by edition and have changed across game versions, so check which edition you play before relying on any specific distance, light level, or command.
The two likely sources
Pillagers are hostile mobs that show up in two different ways, and players often blur them together.
Patrols
A pillager patrol is a small group that spawns naturally in the overworld and moves together. Patrols are not tied to a fixed structure. They can appear while you are at home, cross open terrain, and leave again without any outpost involved. The Minecraft Wiki’s patrol reference, a community-maintained source, describes them as naturally spawning groups and gives edition-specific details on how they form.
Because patrols are independent of outposts, a patrol at your door is not evidence that a tower exists anywhere close. Patrol leaders are commonly identified by a banner they carry, which can help you recognize a group, though the appearance and behavior of patrol members should be checked against your edition’s current documentation.

Outpost spawns
A pillager outpost is the tower structure with a pillager presence built around it. The Minecraft Wiki’s pillager reference separates the recurring spawning tied to outposts from patrols. Outpost spawning follows the outpost’s own spawning area rather than the position of the nearest patrol route. If your base sits inside or near that area, you will see pillagers arrive repeatedly in roughly the same place, even if you never see the tower itself.

How to tell which one you have
Observation is more reliable than guessing. Watch for these patterns over several in-game days, not a single encounter:
- Count the group. Does a single cluster of pillagers arrive together and move across open ground? That looks like a patrol. Repeated arrivals in the same spot near your base point toward an outpost spawn area.
- Note where they appear. Patrols tend to enter from wherever they are traveling. Outpost-related pillagers keep appearing near the same location, which is why a pattern of repeat arrivals is the clue to watch for.
- Check the map for overlap. Walk out from your base in a straight line and look for a pillager tower within the area where the pillagers come from. If you find one, your base may be inside an outpost’s spawning zone.
- Record the timing. Patrols are episodic. If the arrivals keep coming back at regular intervals while you are nearby, treat that as a stronger outpost signal than a one-off group.
These steps show a pattern; they do not measure a distance. Exact spawn ranges are the part of the mechanic that changes between editions and versions, so do not treat a fixed radius from an old guide as settled.

Why destroying the tower may not stop the spawns
Removing a visible outpost tower is the first fix many players try, and it does not always work. The Minecraft Wiki’s pillager reference states that outpost spawning is separate from the visible structure and can continue after the tower is destroyed. Whether the spawns stop in your version depends on the exact mechanics for that edition, so test the result in your own world rather than assuming it.
If pillagers keep arriving after you remove the tower, the source is probably still the outpost’s spawning area, not a leftover structure. In that case, moving the base is more dependable than trying to clear the area by hand.

Java and Bedrock differ
Patrol composition and spawn conditions are not identical across Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Before you follow any numeric condition, check two things: which edition you play, and which game version is installed. Advice written for one edition often gives the wrong answer on the other.
Mojang’s official Java Edition snapshot changelog for 18w47b, published in 2018, records that the cluster size of pillager spawning was reduced so outposts would not flood an area. That is useful evidence that the mechanic has been adjusted over time. It is not a complete specification for current releases, so it should not be used as the final word on how many pillagers to expect today.

Practical next steps
- Confirm your edition and version in the game’s main menu or launcher before reading any guide.
- Decide whether you are seeing a single group that passes through (patrol) or repeated arrivals in one place (likely outpost).
- If you find an outpost near your base, expect its spawns to continue even after the tower is gone.
- If you need exact distances, light thresholds, or spawn-proofing designs, check current documentation for your exact edition and version, and test changes in a copy of your world first.
What is and is not established
The distinction between patrols and outpost spawning is well documented in community references and in the official outpost guidance. What is less certain is the exact spawn radius, timing, and group size for your version, because those details have changed and differ between Java and Bedrock. Any guide that gives precise numbers without naming an edition and version should be read with caution.
