CurseForge can show “locked” for three different reasons: a mod may be intentionally excluded from bulk actions, an update may be hitting a read-only or in-use file, or the app may be showing an incorrect lock status. Where the label appears—and what you were trying to do—determines which explanation fits.
What does “locked” mean in CurseForge?
It is not one universal error. CurseForge release notes and support guidance describe distinct situations, so first note the screen where the word appears and the action that failed.

Is the mod intentionally locked?
CurseForge’s per-mod lock is a modpack setting. It keeps a selected mod out of bulk actions such as “Update All”; it does not, by itself, mean another program has the file open. This behavior is documented in App Release Notes 1.294.
If you only see the lock while using a bulk action, check the mod’s state in the modpack. If the lock is intentional, the bulk action will skip that mod. If you meant to update it, manage that mod separately rather than treating the label as a file-system error.

Did a file operation or modpack update fail?
A failure involving a read-only or locked file is a different case. CurseForge’s June 16, 2026 release notes for app version 1.309 say: “Minecraft – Fixed an issue where modpack updates could fail when some of the files were read-only or locked.” This establishes that CurseForge addressed a specific update issue; it does not establish that every locked-file error has the same cause or that every case is fixed.
- Record the context. Note the exact error wording, the action that failed (install, update, or removal), the affected file path if shown, and your CurseForge app version.
- Close possible file users. Exit Minecraft and other programs that might be using the affected files, then retry. CurseForge’s Crash Assistant describes “UsedByAnotherProcess” as “A file is locked by another program”; that category makes another process worth checking, but it does not identify the process in your case. - Check the app version. If the failure is a Minecraft modpack update involving read-only or locked files, compare your installed version with 1.309, the version whose release notes document a fix for one such issue. The notes do not promise that updating will resolve unrelated failures.
- Protect the affected files. Do not delete or change files just because they appear locked. Identify the specific path first and keep a backup before making manual changes.
Could the lock label be wrong?
Yes. In its Dec. 29, 2025 release notes for app version 1.295, CurseForge said it fixed an issue where unlocked mods appeared locked on their project page. That is evidence of a past display bug, not proof that a current lock is only cosmetic.

Check whether the app actually blocks an operation. If the mod works as expected and the lock appears only on its project page, the display may be misleading; if an install, update, or removal fails, use the file-operation checks above.
Should you clone the modpack to remove the lock?
Not as a general repair. CurseForge says compatible locked mods become unlocked when a modpack is cloned to a different Minecraft version, but it also cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed after changing versions. Cloning changes the version context and may affect compatibility; it is only relevant if you are deliberately moving the pack to another Minecraft version, not a routine fix for a locked file. What information helps identify your case?
The word “locked” alone is not enough to choose a fix. When asking for help, include the screen where it appears, the exact error text, what you were trying to do, the affected file path if available, and your CurseForge app version. These details distinguish an intentional per-mod setting from a file-access failure or a misleading display.
