The Ender Dragon’s gender is not specified in the official Minecraft sources cited here. The idea that the dragon is female is a player interpretation, often tied to the egg it drops—but Minecraft’s official description presents that egg as a reward, not as evidence that the dragon laid it.
What does Minecraft officially say about the Ender Dragon’s gender?
Microsoft’s Minecraft Bedrock Contributor Style Guide, last updated September 19, 2023, says: “Mob pronouns: mobs in Minecraft use gender-neutral pronouns unless they have a specified gender.” The guide is a writing standard, not a lore encyclopedia, but it gives clear direction for referring to mobs whose gender has not been specified.

Minecraft’s official Ender Dragon article, published August 21, 2025, describes the dragon as a hostile monster and says defeating it yields a dragon egg. It does not identify the dragon as male or female. On the evidence of these official sources, the dragon’s gender is unspecified.
Does the dragon egg prove the Ender Dragon is female?
No. The egg is a game reward, but the official description does not say the dragon laid it, explain it as a product of reproduction, or connect it to the dragon’s sex or gender. Calling the dragon female on that basis is an inference, not an explicit statement of Minecraft canon.

Why do some players call the Ender Dragon “she”?
Some players interpret the egg as a sign that the dragon is female, and some use “she” when talking about the dragon. Community discussion has also included competing claims about whether Minecraft mobs have genders. The Minecraft Wiki’s summary recounts historic feminine pronoun use and later statements attributed to Mojang figures that mobs have no gender. That is secondary reporting; it does not replace a verified original developer statement about the Ender Dragon.
It is fine to use “she” when describing a player’s interpretation or quoting a particular source. It is more accurate not to present that pronoun as settled official canon.
