They may be waiting at your last command point, walking home after dismissal, trapped by pathfinding, separated by a quest script, or affected by a bug. Start by checking the companion’s current command and the last place or transition where you saw them. Then apply only the recovery steps documented for that specific game: menus, travel, quest progression, file repair, or a pre-issue save.
What “missing” usually means
“Disappeared” describes the symptom, not the cause. A follower can be absent from your screen while still assigned to a valid location or state. Treat these cases differently before taking a drastic action:

- Waiting: You ordered the companion to hold position, perhaps during combat or while solving a puzzle. They remain there until the game receives a follow command or another state change.
- Dismissed: The companion has left the active party and is travelling to a home, base, settlement, or another designated destination.
- Pathing delay: The character is walking through the world and has become delayed or stuck on terrain, a doorway, or an object.
- Quest restriction: A mission, checkpoint, scripted scene, or story transition temporarily removes the character from normal party behaviour.
- Party-link failure: The character exists but is no longer linked to your active group. This is especially important in games that use portraits, party chains, or waypoint groups.
- Software bug: The game has lost the correct NPC state, failed to spawn the character, or left them stuck in an invalid behaviour.
- Death or permanent removal: Some games allow a companion to die or leave permanently. Confirm that possibility in the game’s own rules before assuming a recovery bug.
Do not use a universal button sequence. A “wait” command, follower wheel, party portrait, or recovery activity exists only in games that implement it, and labels can change between platforms and versions.
Read the last event before choosing a fix
The most useful diagnostic information is what happened immediately before the companion vanished. Compare these clues with the likely cause and first action:

Write down the last command, location, quest objective, and transition before experimenting. That record tells you which save is safe to reload and prevents you from searching every settlement in the game.
A safe recovery sequence that works across many RPGs
The order below limits lost progress and avoids applying an incompatible command. Stop when the companion returns; later steps are more disruptive.
- Open the companion or party controls. Confirm that the character is recruited, alive under the game’s rules, assigned to your active party, and set to follow. If the game has portraits, a party chain, or a group-link indicator, check that the companion is connected rather than merely listed in your roster.
- Revisit the last wait point. Search the exact room, camp, street, ship, or battlefield where you gave the command. A follower told to wait can remain there indefinitely. Do not assume they will teleport to you after a normal door transition.
- Check the dismissal destination. If you selected dismiss, go to the companion’s home, base, settlement, ship, or other assigned location. If the game shows a route or allows time to pass, let that process complete before changing several locations at once.
- Issue follow again at close range. Use the game’s dialogue, wheel, interaction prompt, or party command. A follow order can repair a state that looks like disappearance, but the exact control is title-specific.
- Try an in-game transition documented for that title. Fast Travel, changing planets or systems, sleeping, changing ships, or moving through a loading zone can refresh an NPC state. These are recovery attempts, not guarantees for every RPG.
- Inspect the current quest and checkpoint. Read the objective and journal. A companion may be unavailable until a mission advances, or a retry checkpoint may have left the camp or party in an unusual state. Follow the game’s support instructions rather than abandoning the quest at random.
- Restart or repair the installation when the problem persists. Fully exit and relaunch if the title recommends it. Where the platform supports file verification, use that option. Keep a separate current save before trying any rollback.
- Load a save made before the disappearance. Choose the newest save that predates the command, transition, or quest checkpoint associated with the failure. A reload removes every action made after that save, so preserve a separate save first when possible.
Skyrim: retrace the wait point, then Fast Travel
Find a follower who stopped appearing
Bethesda’s Skyrim support guidance starts with the last instruction, not a console command. If you told the follower to wait, return to that location. The support page states: “If you told your follower to wait for you, they will be where you asked them to wait.” Search the exact interior or exterior area, including the spot where a fight or conversation ended.

After checking the wait point, Bethesda advises trying Fast Travel to bring the follower to your new location. Make the trip through the normal map interface and then check the destination. This recommendation applies to the Skyrim follower problem described by Bethesda; it is not evidence that Fast Travel repairs every RPG’s companion system.

If the follower does not return, note whether the absence began during a quest, after a door or loading screen, or after dismissal. Those details determine whether you should pursue a quest-specific explanation or load an earlier save instead of repeating travel.
Fallout: New Vegas: distinguish Wait, travel-home, and Lucky 38 cases
A companion who is not following
Bethesda’s support article for a non-following companion recommends trying the Wait command or Fast Traveling to another location. In the article’s exact wording: “If a companion is not following the player, try using the "Wait" command or Fast Traveling to another location.” The instruction is counterintuitive: issuing Wait and then changing location can refresh the follower state in the specific situation Bethesda documents.
Another New Vegas support case involves companions left in Wait mode around the Lucky 38. In that situation, select Follow on the companion wheel or ask the companion through dialogue. If your game does not show that wheel option, use the available dialogue command rather than assuming a different title’s control exists.

A dismissed companion who has not arrived home
When dismissed, a companion may path toward their home or toward the Lucky 38. Bethesda notes that they can become stuck in world terrain on the way. Check the recruitment location, normal home, and the Lucky 38 before concluding that the character has been deleted. If the route is blocked and the character never arrives, the documented escalation is to reload a save from before the problem.

These cases can look identical in the field: an empty party slot, no companion beside you, and no obvious marker. The last command matters more than the visual symptom. A Wait order points you back to the hold position; a dismissal points you toward the home route; a Lucky 38 issue points you toward Follow through the wheel or dialogue.
Starfield: retrieve waiting followers and refresh the assignment
Use the waiting-follower activity
Starfield includes a specific recovery option: open Activities and choose Retrieve Waiting Followers. Use it when a companion was told to wait and you cannot reach or remember the location. This is a title-specific menu item, not a standard RPG feature.
Apply the other supported checks
Bethesda’s Starfield troubleshooting flow lists several additional actions for a missing or stuck companion:
- Sleep at the Lodge or on your ship.
- Travel to a different system or planet.
- Change ships where the game allows it.
- Advance the relevant quest if recruitment or availability is story-gated.
- Recruit Vasco as a recruitment check when the recruitment process itself is failing.
- Reload a save created before the companion became missing or stuck.
Use these as separate tests, changing one condition at a time. For example, retrieve waiting followers before changing ships; otherwise you will not know whether the missing state came from a wait order or the ship transition.

When the quest—not the follower—is in control
Red Dead Redemption 2’s Chapter 2 camp issue
Rockstar’s support article, updated March 29, 2024, describes a narrow Red Dead Redemption 2 problem in which four camp companions appear only when they have missions. The issue is tied to a particular Chapter 2 mission completed using Retry Checkpoint. Rockstar says the listed companions return to camp at the beginning of Chapter 4.
For the affected scenario, Rockstar’s interim advice was to restart the mission without using Retry Checkpoint, or load a save from before the failure. Do not generalize this case to every camp companion or to another chapter. The support information identifies the mission and checkpoint pattern; it does not establish here whether a later game update changed the behavior.
Recognize a scripted absence
If the companion vanished exactly when a cutscene, mission retry, checkpoint reload, or objective transition began, do not spend an hour searching ordinary destinations first. Check the mission state, follow the documented replay procedure, and keep a pre-checkpoint save. A character controlled by a script may not respond to ordinary party commands until that script finishes or is reset.

Software bugs that imitate a command or pathing mistake
Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian’s official patch notes record fixes for companions failing to follow after recruitment, groups becoming unlinked when using waypoints, and NPCs disappearing or getting stuck while running away. These fixes demonstrate why a missing character is not always a player error. They do not provide one universal action for every current save: the correct response depends on the game version, the exact symptom, and whether the save was created before or after the relevant fix.

When a Baldur’s Gate 3 companion disappears after recruitment or a waypoint, check the active group and party portraits first. If the character is unlinked, reconnect the group through the game’s normal party controls. If an NPC vanished during a flee sequence, preserve the save and consult the current patch and support information before making irreversible choices.
Genshin Impact NPC problems
Genshin Impact’s support flow concerns NPCs, which are not necessarily party companions. Use it only when the missing character is an NPC affected by a display or stuck-state problem. HoYoverse recommends exiting and restarting the game, then verifying game files through the wrench icon on the login page. If the problem remains, contact support with screenshots or video so the team can identify the quest and location.
How to choose between travel, quest progress, and a save reload
Try travel when the state is probably stale
Fast Travel or another loading transition is the least destructive option when the companion was following normally and vanished after changing location. Skyrim and New Vegas support pages specifically recommend Fast Travel for their documented follower problems. Starfield support suggests moving between systems or planets. Because these are game-specific recommendations, repeat them only when the title’s support flow includes them.
Advance the quest when the timing is exact
Quest progression is more appropriate when the companion disappeared at an objective, checkpoint, or recruitment step. Read the current objective and avoid skipping dialogue or abandoning the mission unless the official procedure says to restart it. In Starfield, advancing a quest is one of Bethesda’s listed checks; in the Red Dead Redemption 2 case, the mission retry method is the central clue.
Reload when the state is persistent or the route is broken
A pre-issue save is the cleanest recovery for a companion trapped by a bad script or path. Bethesda lists earlier-save reloads for New Vegas and Starfield, and Rockstar lists one for the affected Red Dead Redemption 2 camp scenario. Before loading, create a separate current save if the game permits it. The older save will remove all progress made after its timestamp, including exploration, loot, dialogue, and completed objectives.
What not to assume
- Do not assume a missing marker means death. Verify the game’s companion rules and current quest state.
- Do not assume Fast Travel is universal. It can refresh a state in one title and do nothing in another.
- Do not search every home at random. First identify whether the last command was Wait, Follow, or Dismiss.
- Do not overwrite your only recent save. Keep a recovery point before testing a quest restart or rollback.
- Do not apply another game’s menu path. “Retrieve Waiting Followers,” a follower wheel, party portraits, and dialogue commands are different systems.
- Do not treat patch notes as a personal fix list. A recorded bug fix explains a possible cause, but the correct current remedy depends on your version and save.
A compact checklist for the next time it happens
- Record the last command and exact location.
- Check the active party, portrait link, and follow state.
- Return to the last wait point.
- Check the home or dismissal destination.
- Use the game’s documented follow command.
- Try the supported travel, sleep, ship, or system transition.
- Read the quest objective and identify any checkpoint timing.
- Restart or verify files only where the title’s support flow recommends it.
- Load a pre-issue save while preserving a separate current save.
- Contact the game’s support team with the platform, version, quest, location, and a screenshot or video if the problem remains.
The reliable principle is simple: locate the state before trying to relocate the character. Waiting, dismissal, quest scripting, pathfinding, party unlinking, and genuine bugs require different remedies. Official examples from Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, Starfield, Red Dead Redemption 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Genshin Impact show why a title-specific diagnosis is safer than a supposed universal fix.
