Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A black frame between videos in an OBS property-tour playlist does not have one confirmed, universal cause. First determine whether it appears as one playlist item ends and the next begins, or during a transition between scenes. Then check which playback source you use, its visibility and restart settings, and whether another source is covering the video.
First identify when the black frame appears
- Between consecutive videos in the same playlist: troubleshoot the playlist source and the handoff between media files. OBS’s documentation describes playlist and playback controls but does not identify one setting as the universal fix for black frames between playlist items.
- When switching scenes: troubleshoot the scene transition and whether a source restarts as it becomes visible. This is a different problem from a gap during playlist playback.
- Across an area that should show other scene content: check whether a source above it in the Sources list is obscuring that content.
Check which OBS playback source you use
VLC Video source
OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist and relies on VLC libraries. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation says to install 64-bit VLC. VLC Video has playlist and visibility controls of its own, so do not assume its settings match those of the built-in Media Source. The OBS guide documents looping on and shuffle off by default, as well as behavior to stop when not visible and restart when visible. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
Built-in Media Source
The built-in Media Source is documented for an individual media file, rather than a playlist. Its documented defaults include “Restart playback when source becomes active” enabled and “Show nothing when playback ends” enabled. If you built a sequence from several Media Sources, inspect the settings on the source that is active when the black frame occurs.
Media Playlist Source plugin
If your scene uses the Media Playlist Source plugin, note its installed version and whether the playlist has repeated file paths or was recently cleared. The plugin’s update history records version-specific fixes: version 0.1.3, dated April 13, 2025, addressed playlist continuation after a transition and when the next video path is the same; version 0.1.2, dated March 10, 2025, included fixes involving the last frame remaining after clearing the list and lag with an empty directory. These notes are reasons to check the version and playlist state, not proof that the plugin causes every black frame. Review the plugin’s update history.

If the black appears during a scene transition
Check whether the target Media Source restarts as it becomes active. In an OBS forum thread about scene transitions, a contributor explained that the transition can begin from the frame the source is displaying at that moment; if the source has restarted and is black, the transition can show black. For that specific scenario, try turning off “Restart playback when source becomes active” on the affected Media Source, then test the same transition again. Do not treat this as a general fix for black frames between items in a single playlist. Read the scene-transition discussion.
Check source order and visibility
In the OBS Sources dock, sources higher in the list appear above lower sources and can cover them. If the black area is masking content that should remain visible, inspect the order and visibility of the sources in that scene. Move or hide an overlapping source only if that matches the intended layout. OBS’s Sources Guide explains source order.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce and classify the symptom. Note whether the frame appears between files in one playlist, while changing scenes, or over other scene content.
- Confirm the source type. Check whether the scene uses VLC Video, one or more built-in Media Sources, or the Media Playlist Source plugin.
- Inspect relevant playback behavior. For VLC Video, check playlist and visibility settings. For a built-in Media Source involved in a scene transition, check “Restart playback when source becomes active.” Change one setting at a time and retest.
- Inspect the Sources dock. Confirm that a source above the video is not hiding it or other content.
- If using the playlist plugin, check its version and list state. Pay particular attention to repeated file paths or entries left after clearing a list; compare the installed version with the plugin’s update history.
- If the cause remains unclear, gather details. Record your OBS and operating-system versions, source type, VLC version if applicable, relevant visibility or restart settings, and a sample of the media files. Without those details, the available documentation cannot establish the exact cause.
