There are two different changes behind the question. Capcom has described how it redesigned Chris for Resident Evil 7, including using photogrammetry, but the sources available here do not explain exactly why his appearance changed again in Resident Evil Village (also called Resident Evil 8). His suspicious behavior in Village has a clearer explanation: it is part of the story’s mystery and an exploration of his darker side.
Why does Chris look different in Resident Evil Village?
The specific reason for the visual differences between Chris’s Resident Evil 7 and Village models has not been established in the developer interviews cited here. Those sources explain the design process for Resident Evil 7, but they do not say why Capcom adjusted his appearance for Village. Claims that a particular change was caused by fan backlash, his age, a plot point, or a technical limitation should not be treated as confirmed.

What Capcom did explain was the earlier redesign. In a developer account, Resident Evil 7 director Koji Nakanishi said the team used photogrammetry, scanning a real person as the basis for Chris’s character model. The team selected a model for the face and tough appearance they wanted, and considered his posture and military bearing part of the characterization. A military adviser helped the developers choose and present uniform pieces. Capcom’s account of the design process describes the Resident Evil 7 portrayal—not the later change in Village.
Why does Chris act like an antagonist in Village?
Chris’s alarming actions are presented as a story mystery, not as evidence that the game has simply turned him into a conventional villain. Village keeps Ethan Winters as its protagonist and takes place four years after Resident Evil 7, giving the story room to place Chris in a more unsettling role while withholding his motives.

Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda explained that Chris’s entrance was important to the game’s world-building and that the developers wanted players not to know his intentions until the ending. Director Morimasa Sato likewise described Chris’s actions as one of the game’s major mysteries and said the story explores a darker side of the character and lets players consider how he has changed. These comments explain the narrative choice to make Chris seem suspicious; they do not explain a specific change to his face or body model.
