If EA says The Sims 4 is already running when no game window is open, the launcher may be detecting a game process that is still active in the background. That is one plausible cause, not a confirmed diagnosis for every case: the game may also have failed during launch, or another program may be interfering. Start by checking for a stuck process, then work through the repair and launcher steps below.
Why the message can appear with no game window
A game can stop displaying on screen without its process closing cleanly. A launcher may then treat that leftover process as an active game. Steam Support describes its equivalent “app already running” error as commonly occurring when a game closed improperly after a silent crash or is failing to launch properly. That guidance concerns Steam’s generic error, not a definitive diagnosis of this exact EA app message. An older EA community reply also recommends checking Task Manager for a Sims 4 process, but it is community guidance rather than current official EA documentation.

So the message does not prove that a visible copy of the game is open, nor does it establish one cause by itself.
Try these steps in order
1. Look for a stuck Sims 4 process on Windows
- Close any visible game window and exit the EA app or Steam.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Check the running processes for The Sims 4 or a Sims 4 process that remains despite the game window being closed.
- If you find a clearly hung Sims 4 process, select it and choose End task. Do not end unrelated processes.
- Restart the PC, open the launcher, and try launching the game once.
This check is for Windows. A process that is not visible as a normal window may still be running, but finding one is not guaranteed to explain every instance of the message.

2. Repair the game in the EA app
For an EA app installation, open Library, select the game’s three-dot menu, and choose Repair. Wait for the repair to finish, then try launching again. EA recommends Repair for games that will not load; its guidance does not say that damaged game files are the confirmed cause of this particular message.
3. Temporarily test with the EA in-game overlay off
EA says the in-game overlay can sometimes contribute to a game crash and recommends turning it off as a launch troubleshooting test. Disable it temporarily, try the game, and restore the setting after testing if it does not help or once the issue is resolved. This is a test for a possible launch factor, not a guaranteed fix.

4. Clear the EA app cache if the launcher is misbehaving
In the EA app, go to Help > App Recovery > Clear Cache. If the app will not open on Windows 10 or 11, use the Start menu to find the EA folder and open App Recovery from there. EA describes cache clearing for launcher problems such as offline mode, stuck or failed downloads and updates, or a game missing from the Library. It does not identify cache clearing as a specific fix for a stuck Sims 4 process, and it cannot fix an outage or server downtime.
5. Check for interference from other software
Close or disable background applications one at a time where practical, then retry the launch so you can identify whether a particular program makes a difference. EA also recommends allowing the EA app and games through security software; its troubleshooting guidance says a clean boot can help identify startup programs that interfere with launching. Follow the instructions from your computer or security-software vendor, and restore your usual protection and settings after testing.

6. If you installed through Steam, use Steam’s checks too
Steam Support recommends verifying game files for its generic already-running error. It also notes that a game may be running under another operating-system user account. These are general Steam recommendations, not a Sims-specific diagnosis from EA.

- Whether the game is installed through the EA app or Steam.
- Your Windows or macOS version.
- Whether Task Manager showed a Sims 4 process after the window had closed, if you use Windows.
- Which troubleshooting steps you tried and what happened after each one.
EA’s forum index lists this wording as a known category and directs cases not covered there to the relevant technical forum.
