A Ubisoft account connects you to Ubisoft Connect and to account-linked features such as friends, rewards, and supported cross-play or cross-progression. Whether you need one to launch a particular game—or to play its single-player mode offline—depends on the game, platform, and feature. Ubisoft describes Connect as a free service that requires an account: Ubisoft Connect.
What a Ubisoft account does
Ubisoft Connect is Ubisoft’s player-services ecosystem, available through its PC application and from supported games on PC and consoles. The account supplies a shared identity for services such as managing a Ubisoft game library, connecting with friends, and accessing rewards. Ubisoft says players can earn Units and redeem them for rewards or eligible Ubisoft Store discounts; availability and conditions vary.
An account can also connect platform accounts to supported features. Ubisoft says linking may enable cross-play or cross-progression when a game and platform support them. Cross-progression lets you access progress on a linked platform where you own the game; it does not provide a free license for other platforms. See Ubisoft’s account-linking guidance.
Do you need one to play every Ubisoft game?
There is no universal answer established for every Ubisoft game, platform, and mode. Ubisoft Connect itself requires an account, and some game-access workflows and features use one. But an account prompt does not prove that every title requires an account for every mode, or that every Ubisoft game always needs an internet connection.

When you launch a Ubisoft game through Steam
Ubisoft’s instructions for Steam direct players to launch the game from Steam, continue through the Ubisoft sign-in prompt, sign in or create an account, and choose to link the accounts. The Ubisoft and Steam accounts serve different purposes; linking associates them for the game’s Ubisoft services.

If the game is missing from your Ubisoft Connect library, first check which Ubisoft account is signed in and which account was used to activate or redeem the game. Ubisoft says games and in-game content are linked to the Ubisoft account where they were activated or redeemed, so a Steam purchase may not appear in a different Ubisoft account. See the Steam linking instructions and the missing-game guidance.
What to know before linking or unlinking accounts
Check that you are signed in to the Ubisoft account you intend to use before linking a platform account. Ubisoft warns that linking or unlinking can affect games and subscriptions. You may only be able to relink a platform account to the Ubisoft account it was originally connected to; changing the linked account may require Ubisoft Support.

For that reason, unlinking is not a good first troubleshooting step if a game or feature is missing. Confirm the accounts involved and consult Ubisoft’s linking guidance before making a change.

Ubisoft Help says Ubisoft Connect PC can start in Offline mode without an internet connection. Automatic updates will not install while the application is offline. This describes the PC application; it does not guarantee that every game or feature can be used offline. Check the requirements for the particular title.

Ubisoft+ has separate terms. The cited US Ubisoft+ Subscription Terms 2.0 require a persistent internet connection even for offline play. Subscription terms are region-specific, so check the terms that apply to your location.
Account trade-offs: privacy, access, and security
An account makes Ubisoft’s connected features available through a common identity, but it also means managing account credentials and data. Ubisoft’s US privacy policy describes processing account identifiers, gameplay and device information, and login data to provide services and support security. That is the US policy; consult the policy for your region for the terms that apply to you.

Review the relevant regional policy before closing an account.
