It is part of his recognizable assassin costume, but Ubisoft’s description of Assassin’s Creed II stealth points to crowd blending and environmental hiding—not the cape—as ways to avoid detection.
Does Ezio’s cape help him hide?
Ubisoft’s overview of Assassin’s Creed II describes stealth through hiding places such as haystacks, benches, and wells, as well as blending into groups of people. It also explains that notoriety rises after actions such as fighting, killing, or stealing, making guards more attentive to Ezio. The overview does not identify his cape as camouflage or a stealth tool. Ubisoft’s account of the series’ stealth evolution is therefore evidence for how the game handles concealment, not for a special function of Ezio’s garment.
Why is the cape part of his costume?
The evidence establishes no official in-world explanation or attributable designer statement about why Ezio’s default costume includes a cape. It is reasonable to read the garment as part of the character’s distinctive visual design, but claims that it was chosen for historical accuracy, faction symbolism, or a specific disguise purpose would be interpretation—not a confirmed explanation.
What does the optional Auditore Cape do?
The Auditore Cape is a separate unlockable outfit reward, not an explanation for the cape in Ezio’s recognizable default look. A Steam Community outfit guide says it is unlocked after collecting and depositing all 100 feathers. The same guide reports that wearing it outside Monteriggioni makes Ezio immediately notorious and prevents normal notoriety reduction until he removes it. XboxAchievements’ guide also reports the 100-feather unlock requirement. These are guide descriptions of game mechanics, not Ubisoft commentary about the costume’s design or fictional purpose.

How does notoriety work in Assassin’s Creed II?
Ubisoft says notoriety increases after fights, kills, or theft, making guards more likely to notice Ezio and potentially attack. Players can reduce it by tearing down wanted posters, bribing heralds, or killing officials. That system explains why the optional Auditore Cape’s reported notoriety effect matters during play; it does not establish that Ezio’s default cape is meant to conceal him.
