Start by moving both people to a reliable Wi‑Fi or cellular connection and stopping other high-bandwidth activity. If the call still drops, work through FaceTime activation, account identity, cellular-data permission, Screen Time restrictions, automatic date and time, software, Mac camera and microphone inputs, and finally firewall or router controls. This order separates a network failure from a device, account, or hardware fault without buying equipment that may not address the cause.
What the symptom tells you
The timing and scope of the failure are useful clues. A call that fails for both people at once points toward the connection or an Apple service problem; a call that drops only when one person joins points toward that person’s network, device, or settings. A black picture or missing audio can be an input-permission problem even when the call itself remains connected.

| What you see | Most likely layer | First check |
|---|---|---|
| “Connection unstable,” choppy video, or a call that ends after traffic increases | Wi‑Fi or cellular path, congestion, or a managed network | Try a different fast connection on both devices and stop streaming or large downloads |
| FaceTime will not activate, or calls fail immediately | Apple Account identity, phone line, date and time, availability, or restrictions | Check FaceTime sign-in, selected number or email, automatic time, and regional availability |
| Call stays connected but camera is black or audio is absent on a Mac | Selected camera or microphone, permission, or hardware | Test the devices in Photo Booth or another app, then choose the correct inputs in FaceTime |
| Only calls made from an office, school, hotel, or guest network fail | Firewall, NAT, port mapping, or traffic-inspection policy | Ask the network administrator to review FaceTime’s required ports and router behavior |
| Every app has camera or microphone failures after updates and restarts | Device or component fault | Use Apple Support or an Apple-certified repair provider |
Apple describes slow mobile or Wi‑Fi service and other people streaming on the same Wi‑Fi network as causes of connection alerts, choppy video, black screens, and dropped calls. Read the complete troubleshooting guidance at Apple Support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Test the connection before changing settings
Try a clean Wi‑Fi or cellular path
- End the failed call and have both callers connect to a fast, ordinary Wi‑Fi network, or switch one device temporarily to cellular data where coverage is strong.
- Move closer to the Wi‑Fi access point, or use a location with a stronger cellular signal.
- Pause video streaming, cloud backups, game downloads, and other heavy traffic on that network.
- Place another FaceTime call for several minutes. If it remains stable on the alternate path, the original network—not the camera—is the leading cause.
FaceTime over Wi‑Fi requires broadband. A connection can look fast for web pages yet lose the sustained upload capacity and low delay that a two-way video call needs. Congestion can also be temporary: a call may work early in the day and drop when several household members begin streaming.

Use the two-caller test
Ask the other person to repeat the call from their own alternate connection. If both callers fail only on one home or office network, investigate that network. If one caller fails regardless of Wi‑Fi or cellular service while the other person can call normally, concentrate on the affected device and account. This simple split prevents changing settings on a healthy phone because the other endpoint is having trouble.
Interpret “connection unstable” correctly
The warning is a transport diagnosis, not proof that FaceTime itself is broken. It can appear when packets are delayed or lost on Wi‑Fi, cellular, or the route between the two callers. A call that drops after several minutes often reflects sustained congestion, a weak signal that fluctuates, or a router feature that mishandles real-time media rather than an activation failure.
2. Check service availability and temporary outages
FaceTime is not available in every country, region, or carrier configuration. Confirm that the service is supported where each caller is located and that the relevant carrier permits it. Availability and outage status can change, so check Apple’s current support information and system-status information at the time you troubleshoot rather than relying on an old report. If Apple is experiencing an outage, local setting changes will not restore calls; wait until service is reported as operational and test again.

3. Verify iPhone and iPad FaceTime settings
Confirm the line, identity, and permission
- Open Settings and make sure the cellular line you intend to use is turned on.
- Open FaceTime and turn FaceTime on. Under the reachable addresses, select the intended phone number and/or Apple Account email address.
- If Wi‑Fi is unavailable, open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on region) and allow FaceTime to use cellular data. A disabled toggle can make calls fail as soon as the device leaves Wi‑Fi.
- Check that you are signed in with the expected Apple Account. A pending activation or an identity different from the one your contact is calling can look like a dropped call or an inability to connect.
If FaceTime displays an activation-in-progress state, turn FaceTime off, wait briefly, and turn it on again. Activation may require the phone line and account to be available; changing repeatedly between accounts can make the diagnosis harder, so settle on the account and number you actually want to receive calls on.
Remove restrictions that block calling or the camera
Open Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and review the allowed apps and features. FaceTime and Camera must be permitted. A restriction can prevent a call from starting or leave video unavailable even though the network is healthy. If the device is managed by a family organizer or an organization, the person who controls Screen Time or device management may need to change the policy.
Set the clock automatically
Go to Settings → General → Date & Time and enable Set Automatically. Incorrect time or time zone information can interfere with secure service activation and account authentication. After correcting it, close FaceTime and place a fresh test call instead of judging the result from the old failed session.
4. Refresh the software state
Restart in a controlled order
- Turn FaceTime off in Settings, then turn it back on if activation was waiting.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad. This clears a stalled radio, account session, or media process without erasing your data.
- Ask the other caller to restart as well when the failure affects both ends or the call drops immediately after connecting.
Install the latest offered update
Open Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest iOS or iPadOS update Apple offers for that particular device, subject to the device’s compatibility and available storage. An update can contain fixes for networking, account activation, or camera and microphone handling. Do not infer that a particular operating-system version causes a known percentage of hang-ups: Apple’s support material does not establish a frequency statistic for that claim.

After updating, repeat the same connection test used earlier. Changing several variables at once—network, account, restrictions, and software—makes it difficult to know which change solved the problem.
5. Check a Mac’s camera and microphone separately
Confirm the basic prerequisites
Apple lists three requirements for FaceTime audio or video on a Mac: an internet connection, sign-in to FaceTime with an Apple Account, and a microphone. Video additionally requires a camera. The requirements are listed in Apple’s FaceTime guide.
Test whether the input works outside FaceTime
- Quit FaceTime completely and reopen it.
- Open Photo Booth or another camera application and check whether the built-in or connected camera produces a picture.
- Use a separate audio app or a system recording test to confirm that the intended microphone receives sound.
- If another app also cannot see the camera or hear the microphone, inspect macOS privacy permissions and hardware connections before blaming FaceTime.
Select the correct devices in FaceTime
With a call window open, use FaceTime’s Video menu to choose the correct camera and microphone. This matters after connecting a monitor, headset, dock, virtual camera, or other accessory: FaceTime may be listening to a device that is disconnected or has no input. Remove an accessory temporarily and test the built-in camera and microphone to isolate the variable.
Restart the Mac after changing permissions or devices. If the camera works in Photo Booth but FaceTime alone remains black, the issue is more likely an app state, account, or permission problem than a failed camera module.

6. Account for phone calls relayed through a Mac
A cellular phone call that appears on a Mac is a different path from a normal FaceTime call. Apple’s guide says the iPhone and Mac should be on the same Wi‑Fi network or use Wi‑Fi Calling for this relay feature. Confirm that both devices use the intended Apple Account, are nearby enough for the feature to operate, and remain connected to the same network when testing. A Mac can have a working internet connection for FaceTime while the phone-relay requirement is not met.
Test a direct FaceTime audio or video call separately from a relayed telephone call. That comparison identifies whether the failure is in FaceTime’s internet session or in the continuity and carrier path used for phone calls.

Why a corporate or guest network can break calls
Hotels, schools, offices, apartment guest networks, and parental-control systems may allow web browsing while blocking or rewriting real-time media traffic. Router or firewall policies can drop signaling, refuse dynamic media ports, or mishandle Network Address Translation (NAT). Apple documents these conditions in its FaceTime network guidance.

Ports an administrator should review
| Protocol | Ports listed by Apple | What to ask the administrator to verify |
|---|---|---|
| TCP | 80, 443, and 5223 | Outbound access is permitted and inspection is not terminating the session |
| UDP | 3478–3497, 16384–16387, and 16393–16402 | Media ports are not blocked, remapped incorrectly, or closed while the call is active |
Ask the administrator to check NAT behavior, port mapping, SIP-dropping features, and dynamic media-port settings. Do not randomly open ports on a personal router without understanding the security effect; the network owner should apply the documented policy. A useful diagnostic is to place the same call from cellular data or an unrestricted home network. If it succeeds there, provide the administrator with the affected network’s symptoms and the port list rather than replacing your camera or phone.

8. Decide whether the hardware is at fault
Hardware becomes a leading suspect only after the connection, account, restrictions, software, and alternate-app tests fail. A camera that is black in every camera app, or a microphone that records silence everywhere, indicates a device-level problem. Damage, liquid exposure, or a component that disappeared after a repair also warrants professional inspection.
Use Apple Support for service options and Apple-certified repair. Certified repair is the appropriate escalation when software and network checks do not restore the camera, microphone, or reliable operation; it uses genuine Apple parts according to Apple’s support information. Back up important data and record the exact symptom—such as “camera fails in Photo Booth and FaceTime”—before handing over the device.
There is no single physical product that universally fixes FaceTime hang-ups. A new router, extender, webcam, microphone, or adapter can be appropriate for a separately proven coverage or input problem, but buying one before testing the path and settings can leave the actual restriction untouched.
A compact decision path
- Both callers drop: switch both to alternate Wi‑Fi or cellular service and stop competing traffic.
- Only one caller fails everywhere: verify that device’s line, FaceTime identity, cellular permission, restrictions, date and time, restart, and update.
- Mac video or audio alone fails: test Photo Booth or another app, then select the proper camera and microphone from FaceTime’s Video menu.
- Only one building or guest network fails: give the administrator Apple’s TCP and UDP port requirements and ask about NAT and SIP handling.
- Components fail in every app: escalate to Apple Support or certified repair.
Keep a short record of which network each caller used, whether the failure was immediate or followed several minutes of video, and whether audio, video, or both were affected. Those details let support staff reproduce the correct layer of the problem instead of repeating unrelated resets.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing settings when an alternate network produces a stable call; the original network needs attention. Stop testing account options when FaceTime works under the same account on another permitted network; focus on the blocked path. Conversely, if a Mac’s camera and microphone fail in independent apps, further FaceTime reinstalls are unlikely to help. Escalating with a clear symptom, device model, operating-system version, network type, and steps already completed is faster and safer than repeatedly erasing settings.
