Why Does Fortnite Say “Server Offline” on PC?

The “Server Offline” message does not necessarily mean Fortnite is down. Check Epic’s live service status first, then troubleshoot your PC connection if services are operational.

Fortnite’s “Server Offline” message does not prove that Epic’s servers are down. It can reflect a service outage or a connection problem between your PC and Fortnite. Check Epic’s live status first; if the relevant services are operational, work through Epic’s connection troubleshooting steps.

Check whether Fortnite services are actually down

Open Epic’s public status page when the message appears. Check the Fortnite components relevant to getting into the game, especially Login, Matchmaking, and PC App. Epic also points players to its @FortniteStatus account for live updates. These sources can change, so check them at the time of the error rather than relying on an earlier status report.

The exact “Server Offline” wording is not defined in Epic’s support guidance. A launcher label alone therefore cannot establish whether the cause is an outage or a local connection issue.

What to do if Epic reports an outage

If Epic reports an affected service, wait for it to recover. For matchmaking problems, Epic advises players to wait until the issue is resolved, restart Fortnite, and try again. See Epic’s guidance on Matchmaking Error #5 and #7. That advice concerns matchmaking errors; it does not mean every “Server Offline” message has the same cause.

What to do if the relevant services look operational

A normal status page does not rule out a connection problem on your network or PC. Epic’s general connection troubleshooting article recommends checking the following. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes for this specific message.

  1. Restart your modem or router.
  2. Try a public DNS service.
  3. Synchronize your device’s clock.
  4. Check that required Epic domains are whitelisted.
  5. Reset the device cache.
  6. Check for Windows updates.
  7. Identify and disable proxy servers.
  8. Flush DNS on Windows.
  9. Reset the Windows Hosts file to its default.
  10. Disable background applications.

For the detailed instructions and any launcher-specific steps, follow Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide rather than changing settings based on guesswork.

When to escalate

If Epic’s connection troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, its general guidance recommends contacting your hardware manufacturer. For current Fortnite issues, Epic directs players to its Live Issues and Bugs page, which points to the public status page and FortniteStatus updates. This is general connection guidance, not a special support route for the “Server Offline” wording.
