A Fortnite update on PC can crawl for two different reasons. The Epic Games Launcher may be receiving data slowly over your network, or it may be pausing downloads while it writes files you already have to your drive. The download percentage alone rarely tells you which one is happening, so the fastest way to get an answer is to check what the Launcher is doing and then work through the network side before the local side.
Why the Launcher is doing two jobs at once
When you update Fortnite on PC, the Epic Games Launcher performs two separate operations. It downloads the new data from Epic’s servers, and then it installs that data to your drive. The two steps overlap, but they depend on different resources. A slow network affects the first step. A slow or busy drive affects the second.
Epic’s guidance states that the Launcher can stop downloading while it installs previously downloaded files to disk, then resume once writing finishes. That is why a download speed of zero is not automatically a frozen update. A zero reading can also appear when the disk is the bottleneck, and the speed of that disk determines how long the pause lasts. Epic’s explanation does not quantify those pauses for any particular PC, so treat them as variable rather than as a fixed delay.
Because of this, check the Launcher’s download graph for read/write activity before you conclude anything. If the drive is reading and writing, the update is progressing even though the download rate has dropped to zero. If the rate is low and the disk shows no activity, the transfer is the more likely constraint.

Checking the network side
If the transfer itself is slow, work through these checks in order. Each one is diagnostic: none is guaranteed to speed up an update.
- Check Epic’s server status. Slow downloads can reflect problems on Epic’s end. Look at Epic’s official service status information before changing anything on your own system.
- Remove any Launcher download limit. Epic documents a download speed limit setting. Open the Launcher’s settings, uncheck Limit Download Speeds, restart the Launcher, and try the update again.
- Test a wired connection. Epic recommends trying an Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi when download speeds are slower than expected. Plug the PC directly into the router for one update attempt and compare the rate.
- Test a different internet connection, if one is available. If another network behaves differently, the problem is likely between your PC and your current connection rather than inside the Launcher.
When the update fails or the PC struggles
A slow update accompanied by error messages, or by general performance trouble in Fortnite, calls for a different set of steps. Epic’s general PC troubleshooting sequence for Fortnite includes verifying game files and clearing the Launcher’s cache. Later in the same sequence, it lists drive-error checks and disabling background applications.

These steps address a broader set of problems. Epic’s page is a general Fortnite PC troubleshooting sequence rather than a dedicated guide to slow updates, so use it when the update is also failing or when the game itself is unstable, not as a first response to a slow download rate.

If you have tried the network checks and the disk shows no activity while the rate stays low, the next useful information is the exact error text or the Launcher’s status message, since those narrow down which of the paths above applies to your case.
