That behavior makes “Kris is temporarily escaping the player’s control” the clearest interpretation—but the scenes do not confirm one motive for every removal.
What happens when Kris removes the SOUL?
In DELTARUNE, the red SOUL is associated with the player’s control of Kris. During a removal scene, Kris and the SOUL can act separately: the player can move the detached SOUL while Kris moves or behaves independently. The scene therefore demonstrates a temporary separation between the player-controlled SOUL and Kris’s actions. The Deltarune Wiki’s scene summaries describe multiple removals, including the Chapter 1 ending and reported Chapter 2 scenes.
The exact circumstances and actions differ from scene to scene, so it is safer not to treat them as one repeated action with one confirmed purpose.
Why does Kris do it?
The most direct interpretation is that Kris is temporarily reclaiming agency: removing the SOUL separates them from the player’s control, allowing them to act independently. The recurring action supports that reading, but it remains an interpretation of what the scenes show—not a confirmed explanation of Kris’s motive.

The scenes do not establish that Kris is testing the player, rebelling for one specific reason, or carrying out a particular hidden plan. Those explanations go beyond what the observed separation itself proves.
Has the game confirmed Kris’s motive?
No definitive motive is stated in the sources available here. The official DELTARUNE Steam listing describes the game as a continuing, chapter-based story, but does not explain why Kris removes the SOUL or say that later chapters settle the question. As listed on October 8, 2026, Chapters 1–5 were available and more chapters were planned.

So the distinction is important: the scenes show Kris and the SOUL acting separately; “Kris wants control back” is a plausible explanation of that behavior, not established canon about every scene.
