SEGA’s story overview places Yakuza 0 in December 1988. Majima is managing the Grand cabaret club in Sotenbori while serving a sentence and looking for a route back into the Tojo Clan.
Why Majima was imprisoned and tortured
SEGA’s character biography says Majima defied a direct order from his superiors in an attempt to save his sworn brother, Taiga Saejima, whom the clan had left for dead. Majima was then imprisoned at a black site and tortured before being released into civilian life. Together with the game’s eyepatch origin, this establishes the broad context: he lost his eye during the abuse that preceded the game’s 1988 story.

For a spoiler-light answer, the Xbox Wire interview’s pointer is enough: Yakuza 0 shows how Majima gets the eyepatch. The surrounding context is that his imprisonment and torture followed his attempt to save Saejima. SEGA announced Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on December 8, 2025, and Steam on December 9, 2025; those are announcement dates, not confirmation of current availability in every region.
