Players turned it into a joke when the look appeared to land on another racer just as Luigi passed or attacked them. It is a meme interpretation of a gameplay expression—not evidence that Luigi has a dark motive or that Nintendo designed him to glare threateningly.
What is Luigi’s death stare?
It is the severe expression Luigi sometimes appears to give other racers during Mario Kart 8 gameplay. The contrast is what makes it funny: a familiar, cheerful character seems to deliver a cold, focused glare in the middle of a playful kart race.
Fans gave the look a threatening reading and the nickname “death stare.” The name describes the joke, not an official character trait or story explanation.
Where did the meme come from?
The meme grew soon after Mario Kart 8 launched in late May 2014. Know Your Meme traces early attention to two YouTube videos posted on May 30, 2014: Rizupicorr’s “Waluigi vs Luigi” and Mega Beardo’s “Mario Kart 8 – Luigi’s Death Stare.” A Reddit GIF post titled “Luigi Death Stare” followed on r/gaming on June 1, helping the joke spread. These are documented early examples, not proof of one definitive creator. Know Your Meme’s timeline

Why does Luigi look so angry?
The expression can seem unusually stern, and its timing—when Luigi overtakes or attacks another racer—makes it look as though he is deliberately targeting them. Viewers supply the menace; the scene’s comic effect comes from reading an ordinary gameplay moment as a hostile glare.
The available reporting does not establish why the animation was made or show that Luigi is canonically angry in those moments. It is more accurate to describe the death stare as a fan joke about how the expression looks than as a confirmed explanation of Luigi’s behavior.

Did Nintendo acknowledge the death stare?
Yes. Nintendo later played along with the meme. GamesBeat reported in June 2014 that Nintendo’s E3 digital presentation included a nod to it. In a Japanese Mario Kart 8 advertisement, Luigi also appeared with the death-stare look, as reported by Nintendo Life on July 23, 2014. These references show Nintendo recognizing the joke after it spread; they do not mean the company originated it. GamesBeat’s report · Nintendo Life’s report
GamesBeat quoted Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta discussing the company’s approach to fan culture: “There are different examples of when its the right time for us to take something that happens organically and make it part of corporate messaging.” GamesBeat, June 12, 2014

Can you still see the meme in Mario Kart?
The look became part of the public conversation around Mario Kart 8, and the game’s successor edition is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Players can encounter the same kind of racing moments in the game, but the death stare remains a fan interpretation of Luigi’s expression rather than a separate feature or official plot point.
