Mario wears white gloves to make his movements easier to see when he jumps. That is the reason Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto gives in a Nintendo interview—not a confirmed explanation based on fashion or a general cartoon convention.
Why did Nintendo give Mario gloves?
In Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview about why Mario wears overalls, Miyamoto explains: “Then we gave Mario a pair of white gloves, in order to make his movements easier to spot when he jumped.” The gloves were a visual-readability choice: they helped players follow Mario’s movement during a jump.
A second Nintendo Iwata Asks interview and a Japanese-language Nintendo interview give the same rationale. A 2009 Los Angeles Times report also describes the gloves as helping exaggerate Mario’s movements.
What the explanation does—and does not—establish
Miyamoto’s statement identifies movement visibility during jumps as the purpose. It does not say that a particular background color, a universal contrast rule, or cartoon tradition was the sole reason. Those may sound plausible, but they are not the explanation Nintendo documents here.

The interviews do not quantify how much easier the gloves made Mario to see, nor do they identify the exact first game or date in which he wore them. The supported answer is simpler: the white gloves help make his jumping movements easier to spot.
