Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When Minecraft won’t let you play online, the cause is usually one of six things: a multiplayer privacy setting on a child account, an edition or version mismatch, a missing console online subscription, a host or world setting, a service or network problem, or a sign-in that has stalled. Which one applies depends on the exact error text, your edition (Java or Bedrock), and your platform. Start with the message on screen, then work through the matching checks below.
Start with the exact error message
The message is the most useful clue you have. One commonly reported wording, described in Minecraft’s support guidance, is: “You cannot play online multiplayer because of how your Microsoft account is setup.” Minecraft’s child account troubleshooting page ties this message to the account’s privacy settings. If the account is a child account, the adult Family Account owner must review and change the child’s privacy settings for multiplayer or Realms. The child cannot fix this from their own account.
A different message points elsewhere. Minecraft Help describes this symptom: “When you try to join another player’s world online, you may get a ‘Multiplayer is disabled’ error or be unable to connect.” The error may come from the host’s world settings, the connection itself, or both, so the checks in the sections below still apply. Minecraft’s Bedrock multiplayer connectivity guide covers this symptom.
Match your edition and the type of game you’re joining
Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer ecosystems. A Java client can only join Java-hosted games, and a Bedrock player joins Bedrock worlds, servers, Realms, or LAN games. Trying to join across editions is a common reason a connection fails, and no setting on either side will change that.

The table below separates the main routes. The requirements differ, so identify which route you are using before you troubleshoot.
| Route | Edition | Who must be online | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend’s Bedrock world (hosted by a player) | Bedrock | The host must be online and have started the world with multiplayer allowed. Both players must be online at the same time. | Both players must be Minecraft friends. |
| Realm | Bedrock or Java, per the Realm’s edition | The Realm owner does not need to be online for guests to join. The host-online condition does not apply to Realms. | A Realms subscription is required. Subscription cost is not stated in the cited pages. |
| Java multiplayer server | Java | The server operator’s server must be running. | Supports two or more players without a Realms subscription. |
| LAN | Bedrock | Not stated in the cited help pages. | Not stated in the cited help pages. |
For the Bedrock friend-world and Realm rows, the source for the friend-world requirements is Minecraft’s guide to joining a friend’s Bedrock world online. The Java server route is covered in Minecraft’s Java multiplayer server guide.
Check the version on every device
Players need compatible current releases to connect. Update Minecraft on your device, then confirm that the other players have also updated. A player on an older release can be unable to join a session that a newer release has created, and the error may not state the version as the cause.

Check console and mobile sign-in requirements
Console multiplayer may require an active premium online subscription. Minecraft’s requirements page lists the following, depending on console: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. Console and mobile players also need to link or sign in with a Microsoft account. Confirm the current requirement for your specific platform on Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements page before paying for any subscription, because the requirement is platform-specific and not universal.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the host and the world
If you are trying to join a friend’s world, work through these steps with the host:
- Confirm that you and the host are Minecraft friends on Bedrock Edition.
- Have the host start the world and make sure multiplayer is allowed in its settings.
- Confirm that both of you are online at the same time. A standard hosted world ends its availability when the host goes offline.
- Try joining again. If it still fails, ask the host to restart the world, then retry.
If the world is a Realm, the host-online step does not apply. The Realm owner does not need to be online for guests to join, so a failed join in a Realm usually points to the account, subscription, or service checks below rather than the host’s presence.

Verify the address for Java servers
If you are joining a Java server, check that you have the right address and that you are using the Java edition’s connection method. Minecraft’s Java server guide describes the steps:
- Open the multiplayer screen and choose a saved server, or use Direct Connection or Add Server to enter the address.
- Enter the exact server address the operator gave you, with no extra characters or spaces.
- Select the server to join.
A typo in the address, or an old address from a server that has moved, produces the same symptom as a server that is down, so check the address first.

Check the service and network
Minecraft recommends checking host availability, and for Realms service issues, checking PlayFab Status and Xbox Live Status. Those status pages show whether Minecraft’s connection services are having problems. Custom DNS and port configurations can also conflict with multiplayer connections, so if you use custom DNS settings or have changed port forwarding on your router, try reverting those changes to test whether they are the cause.

- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
A single failed connection does not mean your internet is down. If other online services work and only Minecraft fails, the problem is more likely in the account, the host, or the service than in your general connection.
Refresh your sign-in
If authentication seems stuck, signing out and back in can reset your connection to the authentication servers. Minecraft’s sign-out guidance says this helps with Marketplace, downloadable content, and other game services as well. The exact steps depend on whether you play through the launcher, a console, or a mobile device, so follow the instructions for your platform in Minecraft’s sign-out guide.

If you still see references to a Mojang account, note that Minecraft’s account-migration page states the Mojang-to-Microsoft migration period ended on December 18, 2023, and that Minecraft Support no longer handles migration-related questions. This is background only. It is not a likely cause of a multiplayer connection failure today. Minecraft’s account information page has the details.

What to note before contacting support
Without the following details, the cause of your specific problem cannot be confirmed. Write these down before you contact Minecraft Support:
- The exact error message, word for word.
- Your edition (Java or Bedrock) and the platform (PC, console, or mobile).
- Whether the account is a child account, and whether a Family Account owner manages it.
- The Minecraft version on your device and the version the other players are using.
- The connection route: friend’s world, Realm, Java server, or LAN.
- Whether the host or server was online, and whether the console or mobile subscription is active.
With those details, you can match the error to one of the sections above and avoid trying fixes that do not apply to your route.
