Usually, this message means Minecraft cannot find an entitlement for the Microsoft account and edition currently selected—not that it has proved you never bought the game. Check the account used to buy, redeem, or migrate Minecraft, then confirm you’re trying to access the same edition and platform. If those details match and the game still appears unowned, keep your proof of purchase and contact Minecraft Support before buying it again.
What the message means
A “buy” or “you don’t own Minecraft” prompt is an entitlement-recognition problem: the launcher or Minecraft site is not recognizing access for the account and edition in use. The prompt alone does not establish that the game was never purchased or that an entitlement was removed. Minecraft says a Microsoft account helps users access purchases and other content across devices, but an account mismatch can still prevent the expected purchase from appearing. Minecraft’s Realms page describes the account’s role.
Check the account, edition, platform, and purchase history
Compare four details before changing anything: the account associated with the entitlement, the edition you are opening, the platform or storefront where it was acquired, and how you got access. A mismatch in any one can explain why a purchase prompt appears.
| Check | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Account | The Microsoft account currently selected versus the account used for the original purchase or code redemption. | Purchases are associated with an account; signing in with a different one may not show the expected access. |
| Edition | Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition. | Access to one edition should not be assumed to establish ownership of the other. A Microsoft Q&A user, for example, reported being able to play Bedrock while Java appeared unowned. Microsoft Q&A |
| Platform or storefront | The platform and store where the entitlement was acquired versus the device or edition you are trying to use now. | Minecraft’s listed editions have different platform availability; a license on one platform is not automatically proof of access on another. |
| Account history | Direct purchase, redeemed gift code, or migration from a Mojang account. | Each route points to a different record or account detail to verify. |
If you bought or redeemed Minecraft
Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase or code redemption. If you are unsure which account that was, check your purchase receipt or redemption confirmation. A purchase record tied to another account will not necessarily appear under the account currently open in the launcher.

If you migrated from Mojang
Check which Microsoft account received the migrated access, then compare it with the account selected in the launcher and on Minecraft.net. A Microsoft Q&A advisor recommends checking that the same destination account is in use. The old Mojang sign-in should not be treated as proof that it remains the current route to the game; see Minecraft’s migration announcement.
If you own one edition but another appears unowned
Confirm the exact edition shown in the launcher or purchase record. A Bedrock entitlement and a Java Edition prompt are not necessarily contradictory: the editions are distinct, and evidence of access to one does not by itself establish access to the other. Verify the platform too, because availability differs by edition and device.

Try signing in again, then check the device clock
- Sign out of the Minecraft Launcher, Xbox app, and Microsoft Store.
- Sign back in to each with the Microsoft account used for the original purchase, redemption, or migration.
- Check that your device’s date and time are correct, then reopen the launcher and see whether the expected edition is recognized.
The sign-out and sign-in suggestion comes from Mustafa Salah, an independent advisor responding on Microsoft Learn Q&A, not a formal Microsoft support guarantee. The same Q&A response mentions checking system time; the available information does not establish an incorrect clock as a general cause or promise that correcting it will restore access. Read the community response.

- Keep the purchase receipt, gift-code redemption message, or migration confirmation that matches the account history you checked.
- Note which Microsoft account is selected, which edition and platform show the prompt, and whether another edition is accessible.
- Contact official Minecraft Support and provide the relevant records. The available guidance does not identify a self-service action guaranteed to restore a missing entitlement.
- Wait to repurchase until the account, edition, platform, and purchase history have been checked.
Account-specific records may be needed to determine why access is not appearing; the public examples do not establish a single cause for every ownership warning. Microsoft Learn Q&A reports illustrate possible account and edition mismatches, but they are community cases rather than a definitive diagnostic guide.
