In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players report that during the sky sequence of the quest “The Break of Dawn,” Meridia releases the character before the game’s return teleport fires. The character then falls to the ground and dies. The reports are consistent about the symptom, but no official source has explained the underlying cause, and the fixes players share are unverified.
What the bug looks like
Players describe the failure in plain terms: “I keep falling to my death” and “Meridia keeps dropping me.” The fall happens during the conversation in the sky, when Meridia lifts the character. The reports include players who had already retrieved Dawnbreaker, so the weapon does not appear to be the trigger.
The sequence is supposed to end with a return teleport. In the reported failure, Meridia lets go first, and the character drops before that teleport happens. Because the fall is long, the character dies on landing.
What is and is not established
- Established: The problem is a reported bug in the “The Break of Dawn” quest, and the failure point is the sky sequence before the return teleport.
- Not established: The technical root cause. The sources describing the bug do not explain why the release happens early.
- Not established: Whether carrying less weight prevents the fall. One widely repeated suggestion links encumbrance to the problem, but it is a community theory, not a diagnosis.
- Not established: How often the bug occurs. No published figure exists, and the reports are anecdotal.

| Workaround | Reasoning given by players | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce carried weight before starting the sequence | Suggested as a possible cause of the early release | Anecdotal. Players report it does not always help, and no official source confirms it. |
| Move toward Meridia as she lifts the character, aiming to land near the statue’s base or pedestal | Lets the character land closer to the base instead of falling outside it | Anecdotal. Described in community material; no official confirmation. |
| Advance through the dialogue slowly | Gives time to adjust position before the release | Anecdotal. Described in community material; no official confirmation. |
Try one change at a time, and reload your save between attempts. If you change several things at once, you will not know which one made a difference.
Patches and the PC fix claim
A search result that relays an entry from the Unofficial Skyrim Patch says a version of that patch fixed the fall bug on PC. This is secondhand. The entry does not establish current behavior across editions, platforms, or patch combinations. Before installing it, check that it is compatible with your edition of Skyrim, your platform, and any other mods you run. Do not rely on a specific patch version as a universal fix.

If the fall still happens
- Confirm that your save is from before the sky sequence. A save made after the fall will reproduce the problem.
- Note your platform, game version, and installed mods. These details are what community helpers and any bug report will ask for.
- Report the problem through Bethesda’s support channels, and include the save and the steps that led to the fall.
The reader question has a clear answer: the sky sequence in “The Break of Dawn” can drop your character, and the cause is not confirmed. The fixes that exist are workarounds and a secondhand patch claim, so protect your save and test each change carefully.
