Motion blur does not have a proven, universal nausea effect in ordinary monitor-based games. Some players feel dizzy, queasy, develop a headache or experience eye strain when a game presents strong visual movement while their bodies remain still. Blur can be one part of that presentation, alongside camera bob, shake, weapon sway, automatic camera movement, field of view and sensitivity. For a sensitive player, reducing or disabling blur is a reasonable test, but it is not a guaranteed treatment.
The leading explanation is sensory conflict: the eyes report movement, while the vestibular and other body systems report that the player is sitting still. The brain has to reconcile those conflicting signals, and some people develop visually induced motion-sickness symptoms.

What is happening when a game makes you feel sick?
Games can produce motion-sickness symptoms even when you are physically stationary. A first-person game may show rapid forward movement, turning, camera sway or a sudden change in viewpoint. Your eyes receive cues that resemble walking, falling or rotating, but your inner ear and muscles do not detect the corresponding movement. The brain’s internal model receives information that does not fit together cleanly.

The CDC Yellow Book describes this widely accepted sensory-conflict, also called neural-mismatch, theory. It involves a mismatch among visual, vestibular and kinesthetic information. The Bárány Society’s consensus criteria use the term visually induced motion sickness for symptoms triggered by visual movement, including movement on displays. In practical terms, the game can look as if you are moving while your body is not.

Microsoft Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 gives a concrete example. Camera bob in a first-person game can visually suggest that the player is walking, even though vestibular and other sensory signals indicate that the player is seated. Microsoft explains: “This mismatch between the visual perception of body movement and actual body movement contributes to feelings of motion sickness among players.”
Symptoms may include nausea, dizziness, vertigo, headache and eye strain. People can also notice sweating, warmth, fatigue or a general feeling that the display is difficult to tolerate. Not everyone responds to the same visual effect, and a person who is comfortable in one game may react to another because the speed, camera behavior, frame presentation and control scheme differ.
Where motion blur fits—and what the evidence does not prove
Motion blur blends or smears image detail during movement to make rapid changes appear smoother or more cinematic. Depending on the implementation, it can soften the visual trail of a turning camera, a moving object or a fast pan. That changes the visual signal your eyes receive, but it does not by itself establish that blur is the cause of a player’s symptoms.

The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: dynamic visual stimuli, including video games and computer monitors, can trigger visually induced motion sickness in some people, and motion blur is one setting that accessibility guidance recommends making adjustable or disableable. Those points do not isolate conventional camera or object blur as an independent cause of nausea in non-VR gameplay.
Blur may contribute to discomfort when it adds to a larger load of visual movement. For example, a rapidly turning camera combined with narrow or constantly changing visual detail may be harder for one player to process than a clear image with the same turn. Another player may prefer a small amount of blur because it makes animation feel less harsh. Individual sensitivity, the game’s implementation and the surrounding effects matter.
Evidence from virtual reality also shows why “blur is always harmful” is too broad. A 2017 study tested a purpose-built intervention that blurred the display during controller-driven rotation in a VR first-person shooter. The intervention reduced overall cybersickness and delayed its onset in that experiment. It was a specific VR technique designed for rotation, not ordinary blur on a flat monitor. The result does not show that you should turn blur on in a conventional game; it shows that the effect of blur depends on context, timing and implementation.

How common is game-related motion sickness?
A 2008 Human Factors study placed 40 undergraduate participants in console-game conditions and reported motion-sickness incidence ranging from 42% to 56% across those conditions. That figure describes the study’s sample and setup. It is not a prevalence estimate for all players, and the experiment did not isolate motion blur from the other visual and control factors in a game.

The same person may have no difficulty with a static strategy view but feel unwell during a fast first-person sprint, or tolerate a game at one frame rate and distance better than the same game on another display. The sources do not establish a single threshold at which blur or camera movement becomes unsafe, so treat your own symptoms as the useful signal rather than a universal setting recommendation.
Which settings can reduce the visual conflict?
Microsoft’s accessibility guidance identifies several motion-related controls that developers should consider exposing. If a game offers them, test the controls individually so you can identify the effect that matters to you.

| Setting | What it changes visually | A practical test | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motion blur | Smears detail during camera, object or rapid screen movement. | Switch from on to a lower intensity, then off, while keeping other settings unchanged. | This tests your response to that implementation; it does not prove blur caused the original symptoms. |
| Camera bobbing | Adds rhythmic vertical or positional movement to imitate walking. | Disable it and replay the same route or encounter. | Microsoft identifies the mismatch between apparent walking and a seated body as a motion-sickness concern. |
| Camera shake | Moves the viewpoint during impacts, explosions or other events. | Set it to zero or the lowest available value. | Sudden shake can combine with turning and other visual cues. |
| Weapon sway | Moves the weapon and sometimes the viewpoint while aiming or moving. | Turn sway down or off if the option exists. | The effect and control name vary by game. |
| Automatic camera movement | Re-centers, tracks a target or moves the view without a direct camera input. | Disable automatic movement or recentering where the game permits. | Some games require a limited form of camera assistance, so the available choice may be partial. |
| Field of view (FOV) | Changes how much of the scene is visible and how movement appears at the edges. | Try a modestly different value and keep it for several minutes before judging. | FOV preference is individual; the guidance does not prescribe one universal number. |
| Camera sensitivity | Controls how far or fast the view turns for a given stick or mouse movement. | Lower it if small inputs produce abrupt turns; raise it only if slow correction is the problem. | Changing sensitivity alters control behavior, not just image appearance. |
A step-by-step way to find your tolerable settings
- Stop at the first warning signs. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, headachy or unusually strained, pause the game instead of trying to push through the sensation. Note the game, viewpoint, activity and settings you were using.
- Return to a repeatable scene. If possible, use the same room, route or training area for each test. A repeatable situation makes it easier to separate a setting change from a change in gameplay intensity.
- Change one control. Start with motion blur: reduce it or turn it off, then play briefly. Do not simultaneously change blur, FOV, sensitivity and camera shake, or you will not know which adjustment mattered.
- Test the camera effects next. If symptoms remain, disable camera bob, shake, weapon sway and automatic camera movement one at a time. Microsoft lists these effects together because the total visual motion, not just one slider, can shape the experience.
- Try a different FOV or sensitivity. Make a modest FOV change and allow yourself time to adapt. Separately adjust camera sensitivity so turning is controlled rather than abrupt. There is no evidence that one FOV value works for every player.
- Record the result. Keep the setting that lets you play comfortably and restore any other option that was not a problem. If symptoms recur, stop and rest; do not treat repeated discomfort as a challenge to overcome through exposure.
These are personal adjustments supported by accessibility recommendations, not guaranteed treatments. A game may expose only some of the controls, and a setting that helps one person can make another person’s view less comfortable.

Stop playing, look away from the display and rest. Square Enix’s Health and Safety Information for Playing Square Enix Videogames, last updated November 10, 2020, says that playing and watching videogames can cause motion sickness in some people. Its guidance advises seeking physician guidance for dizziness or nausea while playing and consulting a physician if negative symptoms persist.

This advice is about safety, not diagnosis. A game-related episode can resemble other causes of dizziness or nausea, and an article cannot determine why you feel unwell. Seek medical advice when symptoms are persistent, severe, recurrent outside gaming or otherwise concerning. Do not continue playing in an attempt to discover whether the sensation will pass.

Why the same setting affects players differently
Visual comfort depends on the whole presentation. Turning speed, acceleration, camera height, animation, display size, viewing distance and the player’s susceptibility can interact. Blur may be barely noticeable in a slow third-person game but prominent during a rapid first-person rotation. A player may also react to camera bob while tolerating blur, or react only when several effects occur together.
That variability is why accessibility guidance emphasizes player control rather than a single “correct” configuration. Adjustable effects let a player remove the specific source of discomfort without forcing every player to use a less cinematic presentation. If a title offers presets such as reduced motion, use them as a starting point, then refine individual controls when available.
What developers should provide
For developers, the practical lesson from Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 is to make visual-motion effects controllable. Separate toggles or sliders for motion blur, camera shake, camera bob, weapon sway and automatic camera movement are more useful than one opaque “accessibility” switch. A FOV control and camera-sensitivity options give players additional ways to reduce mismatch, although neither is a universal remedy.
Controls should be easy to find before play and during play, and changes should take effect without requiring a restart when feasible. Clear labels help players understand whether a setting affects blur, viewpoint movement or input response. The aim is not to claim that disabling every effect prevents sickness; it is to let players identify and avoid the combination that causes them trouble.
The bottom line on motion blur and nausea
Some players feel dizzy or nauseous because a game’s visual movement conflicts with the body’s signals that it is sitting still. Motion blur can be part of that visual presentation, but current evidence does not establish ordinary non-VR blur as a standalone, universal cause. If you feel unwell, stop and rest, then test motion blur and other camera-motion controls one at a time. Persistent or concerning symptoms warrant medical advice.
