Usually, the cause is a playback setting or playlist configuration. First check which OBS source you added: Media Source plays one local file, while VLC Video is designed for a list of files. Then check that the intended episodes are actually in that list and review the source’s loop and shuffle settings.
First identify the OBS source
In OBS, select the source in the Sources list and open its properties. The source type determines which controls to check:
- Media Source: loads a local media file. Its Loop setting controls whether that file plays again after it finishes.
- VLC Video: plays a media playlist. Its Loop Playlist setting controls whether playback restarts after the source runs out of files.
These are different source types, so a Media Source will not manage a multi-episode playlist like VLC Video. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for the documented controls and requirements.
If the source is VLC Video, check the playlist and playback settings
- Open the source properties. Select the VLC Video source, then open Properties.
- Confirm every episode is listed. Inspect the playlist entries and their file paths. If only one file is present, OBS has no other episode to play. Add any missing files and confirm the paths point to the intended media.
- Check Loop Playlist. OBS documents this setting as on by default. When on, the playlist restarts after its files have played. Turn it off if you want playback to stop at the end rather than start another cycle.
- Check Shuffle Playlist if the order is unexpected. Shuffle controls whether files play in randomized or listed order; OBS documents it as off by default. It is separate from looping, and an episode repeating does not by itself show that shuffle is the cause.
The official OBS documentation describes these VLC Video settings and notes that VLC must be installed for the source to be available. If you use 64-bit OBS, the documentation specifies 64-bit VLC.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you use Media Source, check its per-file Loop setting
Open the Media Source properties and inspect Loop. When enabled, that source’s file plays again after reaching the end. If you intended a sequence of cartoon episodes, verify that you are using a playlist-capable source such as VLC Video and that its playlist contains all the files you want.
If the repeat happens after changing scenes
VLC Video has a Visibility Behaviour setting for what happens while the source is hidden. OBS documents options to continue, pause, or stop playback while hidden; its listed default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If the episode starts over when you switch back to a scene, inspect this setting. Visibility behavior concerns hidden sources; it is not the shuffle control.

Troubleshoot the symptom, not just the setting
- OBS only plays one file from the playlist: check that the source is VLC Video, then inspect its entries and file paths. A single-file Media Source is expected to play only its selected file.
- The playlist plays in an unexpected order: check Shuffle Playlist and the order of the listed files.
- Playback restarts when the list ends: check Loop Playlist. Its documented default is on.
- Playback starts over after a scene change: check VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour.
- VLC Video is missing or unavailable: verify that VLC is installed and, for 64-bit OBS, that you have 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist and settings look correct: record your OBS version, operating system, source type, playlist paths, and VLC version if applicable. Include an OBS log when seeking help, rather than assuming the behavior is a current bug.
A user report describes OBS 27.2.4 on Windows 10 repeatedly playing one XSPF file from a directory, but that report is version-specific and does not establish a general problem in current OBS. You can review it in the OBS forum thread. OBS’s VLC Video source code also treats loop, shuffle, and visibility playback behavior as distinct settings.
