Why Does My Controller Keep Disconnecting from My PC? USB, Bluetooth, Xbox, and DualSense Fixes

A controller that keeps disconnecting from a PC may have a Bluetooth, USB, power-management, driver, firmware, game-configuration, or hardware problem. This guide shows how to isolate the connection path and fix it without buying unnecessary accessories.

The connection method determines the fix. A controller that disconnects only over Bluetooth needs a different diagnosis from one that drops over USB, through an Xbox Wireless adapter, or only inside one game. Start by connecting the same controller directly to the PC with a known-good data cable.

The connection method determines the fix. A controller that disconnects only over Bluetooth needs a different diagnosis from one that drops over USB, through an Xbox Wireless adapter, or only inside one game. Start by connecting the same controller directly to the PC with a known-good data cable. If it stays connected by USB, the controller’s basic input hardware is probably working and you should investigate Bluetooth pairing, interference, power management, or the wireless adapter. If it also disconnects over USB, focus on the cable, port, controller connector, firmware, and possible hardware failure.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Fastest path: charge the controller, test a direct wired connection, try another USB port and cable, remove and re-pair the Bluetooth device if applicable, disable Bluetooth power saving, update the PC and controller firmware, and then test the controller on another computer or console. Do not buy a replacement controller until those tests show that the problem follows the controller.

First, identify what is actually disconnecting

“Disconnecting” can mean that Windows removes the controller completely, that the wireless connection drops briefly and reconnects, or that a game stops receiving input while Windows still sees the device. These have different causes.

What you observe Most useful place to start
The controller disappears from Windows or you hear the USB-disconnect sound Connection path, cable, port, Bluetooth radio, power management, or firmware
It disconnects only after sitting idle Battery level, controller sleep behavior, Bluetooth or USB power management
It drops during games or when several USB devices are active USB hub or port power, interference, cable movement, or the PC’s chipset and USB drivers
It fails immediately after pairing Stale pairing, incompatible Bluetooth support, driver problems, or low battery
It fails after the PC wakes from sleep Bluetooth or USB power-state recovery, driver problems, or a stale wireless service
Only one game stops responding The game’s input settings, Steam Input, another remapping layer, or per-game controller support
It disconnects over Bluetooth but is stable over USB Bluetooth range, interference, radio drivers, adapter power saving, or the controller’s wireless hardware
It disconnects over USB as well as wirelessly Cable, controller socket, USB port, firmware, battery, or controller hardware

Run the five-minute wired-versus-wireless test

  1. Charge the controller fully or install fresh batteries. A low battery can create symptoms that look like a Bluetooth or firmware problem.
  2. Connect it directly to the PC with a known-good data cable. Do not use a hub for this test. A USB-C controller needs a USB-C cable that carries data; older Xbox controllers may use micro-USB. A charge-only cable can power the controller without providing a usable wired connection.
  3. Play or leave the controller connected long enough to reproduce the problem. Try a second direct USB port if necessary. On a desktop, a rear motherboard port is preferable to a loose front-panel port during diagnosis.
  4. Compare the result with Bluetooth. If USB is stable and Bluetooth drops, the wireless path is the leading suspect. This does not prove that the controller’s Bluetooth radio is healthy, but it makes a bad cable or USB socket less likely.
  5. Test another controller on the same PC, or test this controller on another PC or console. This separates a PC-wide problem from a controller-specific problem.

If moving the cable near the controller connector reliably causes Windows to disconnect, stop using that cable and test another one. If several cables behave the same way, the controller’s USB socket may be loose or damaged.

For the wired test, a known-good controller data cable is more useful than a cable described only as a charging cable. Match the connector—USB-C or micro-USB—to the controller, and confirm that the cable supports data transfer.

Fix Bluetooth disconnections

These steps apply to controllers paired directly with the PC over Bluetooth. They do not apply in the same way to an Xbox controller using a dedicated Xbox Wireless adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Reduce the simple causes first

  • Fully charge the controller or replace its batteries.
  • Keep it within normal Bluetooth range while testing.
  • Temporarily move it away from large metal objects, Wi-Fi equipment, and other sources of radio congestion.
  • Move or temporarily unplug unshielded USB 3.x devices near the PC’s Bluetooth antenna or dongle. Microsoft specifically warns that an unshielded device connected to a USB 3.0 port can interfere with Bluetooth responsiveness and connections.
  • If the PC uses a USB Bluetooth dongle, connect it directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.

Do not judge a Bluetooth connection by its advertised version number alone. A newer Bluetooth label does not guarantee better stability if the adapter has poor driver support, a badly positioned antenna, or interference from nearby USB hardware.

2. Turn off Windows energy saving while testing

Temporarily disable Energy Saver in Windows 11 or Battery saver in Windows 10. The label and location can vary by Windows version, but it is generally under the system’s power settings.

Then check whether Windows is allowed to turn off the Bluetooth adapter:

  1. Press Windows + X and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter—not the controller entry—and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Power Management tab.
  5. If present, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  6. Click OK, restart the PC, and test the controller again.

Some adapters do not expose this checkbox. If it is missing, do not treat that as a failure; continue with the driver, pairing, and interference checks.

3. Reset the Bluetooth connection state

A stale pairing can survive a normal reconnect. On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  2. Find the controller, open its additional options, and select Remove device.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on.
  4. Restart the PC.
  5. Put the controller into pairing mode using the controller manufacturer’s instructions, then choose Add device > Bluetooth and pair it again.

On Windows 10, the corresponding area is usually Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. If the controller appears twice, remove the old or duplicate entries before pairing again.

4. Run Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooter

On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter. You can also find Windows troubleshooting under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters; the exact available options depend on the Windows build.

If the wireless state still appears stuck:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Find Bluetooth Support Service.
  4. Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, start it.
  5. Try pairing or reconnecting the controller again.

Fix USB disconnections

A wired controller or a USB Bluetooth dongle has a different set of failure points from a directly paired Bluetooth controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the cable

Use a cable known to carry data. Replace cables that are kinked, intermittently powered, loose at either end, or described as charge-only. USB-C plugs can fit securely while still failing because the cable is damaged or lacks the required data wiring.

Check the port and hub

  • Connect directly to the PC instead of an unpowered USB hub.
  • Try another port. On a laptop, test a port on the opposite side if available; on a desktop, try a rear motherboard port.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices temporarily, especially devices close to a Bluetooth dongle or controller cable.
  • Avoid a loose front-panel port while troubleshooting.

If the controller works in one port but not another, the failing port, its power delivery, its hub path, or the PC’s USB hardware is more suspicious than the controller. If every USB device behaves strangely, update the PC manufacturer’s chipset and USB-controller drivers rather than changing only the controller settings.

Consider USB power management only after the direct-port test

Windows can place USB devices and hubs into lower-power states through USB power management, including selective suspend. That can matter when a controller drops after idle or when the problem begins after sleep. First prove the behavior with a direct port, a good cable, and unnecessary devices disconnected. Do not immediately disable every Windows power-saving feature; broad changes can reduce battery life and hide the actual cause.

Update, roll back, or reinstall the PC drivers

Bluetooth drivers are a common cause of repeated wireless drops, particularly after a Windows update or when Windows is using a generic driver that does not match the PC’s radio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager with Windows + X.
  2. Expand Bluetooth, right-click the actual Bluetooth adapter, and choose Update driver.
  3. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, check the support page for the computer, motherboard, or wireless-card manufacturer. Model-specific Bluetooth and chipset packages may be newer or more suitable than the generic driver offered by Windows.
  4. If the disconnections began immediately after a driver or Windows update, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
  5. If updating or rolling back does not help, choose Uninstall device for the Bluetooth adapter, restart the PC, and allow Windows to reinstall it. If it does not return, use Device Manager’s hardware-rescan option or install the manufacturer’s driver.

For USB failures, also check the PC manufacturer’s chipset, motherboard, and USB-controller drivers. Updating a controller’s firmware will not repair a malfunctioning USB controller in the PC.

Update the controller’s firmware

Firmware can improve compatibility and wireless reliability, but perform the update over a stable wired connection whenever possible. Do not unplug the controller or interrupt power while the update is running.

Xbox controllers

Microsoft provides controller firmware updates through the Xbox Accessories app on an Xbox console or Windows PC. Connect the controller by USB before starting the update if wireless stability is poor.

Firmware is especially worth checking on an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Xbox has published firmware changes that improved wireless-disconnection behavior when a headset is attached. That does not mean every Xbox disconnection is fixed by firmware, but the headset-specific symptom makes an update a sensible step.

DualSense controllers

Sony supports DualSense connectivity to a PC over USB-C or Bluetooth. On Windows, use the PlayStation Accessories application to update the controller’s device software. If the controller will not connect properly, Sony also recommends resetting it; use the model’s documented reset procedure rather than guessing at button combinations.

Choose the right wireless technology

Xbox controllers can connect to Windows by USB, Bluetooth, or Xbox Wireless. PlayStation controllers such as DualSense use USB-C or Bluetooth on a PC; an Xbox-specific wireless adapter is not a universal Bluetooth replacement.

When an Xbox Wireless adapter makes sense

If an Xbox controller is stable over USB but unreliable over the PC’s Bluetooth connection, a compatible Xbox Wireless adapter can be a technically appropriate alternative. It is intended for compatible Xbox Wireless Controllers and is not suitable for PlayStation or generic Bluetooth controllers.

Microsoft’s current Store listing for the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is marked unavailable, so availability should not be assumed. If considering a marketplace listing, verify that it is a genuine, compatible adapter and not a generic Bluetooth dongle marketed with confusing terminology. It may improve the wireless path, but it cannot fix a failing controller battery, damaged connector, or defective controller radio.

When a replacement Bluetooth adapter may help

A desktop with absent, weak, or unreliable built-in Bluetooth may benefit from a USB Bluetooth adapter for PC, but only after you have checked power settings, driver compatibility, range, interference, and pairing. Plug it directly into the PC during testing, keep it away from noisy USB 3.x hardware, and install its appropriate Windows driver if required.

This is a replacement for the PC’s Bluetooth path—not a repair for the controller. If the same controller disconnects on another computer as well, changing the PC adapter is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.

Test whether Windows or the controller is at fault

Use two controlled comparisons:

  • This controller on another PC or console: If it fails everywhere, suspect its battery, cable, connector, firmware, wireless radio, or other hardware.
  • Another controller on this PC: If multiple controllers fail on this computer, suspect Windows, Bluetooth or USB drivers, power management, interference, ports, or the chipset.
Test result Likely direction Next action

Only one game loses input Game configuration or input-remapping layer Check the game’s controller support, Steam Input, other remappers, and per-game profiles

If only one game is affected

Before changing Bluetooth settings, check whether Windows still sees the controller when the game stops responding. If the controller remains connected elsewhere in Windows, the physical link may not have dropped at all.

Temporarily test with Steam Input or other controller-remapping software configured consistently—or disabled for that game if it is known to conflict. Check the game’s input device selection, controller support, and per-game profile. A game that stops accepting input is not proof of a Bluetooth or USB disconnection.

When should you replace the controller?

Replacement is reasonable only after the failure follows the controller across devices and connection methods. Stronger hardware-failure indicators include:

  • the controller disconnects over USB with multiple known-good data cables;
  • moving the plug at the controller socket reproduces the failure;
  • the battery will not hold a charge or the controller shuts down despite a full charge;
  • the controller fails on another PC or console after pairing and firmware checks;
  • other controllers work normally on the original PC.

At that point, a replacement Xbox Wireless Controller or Sony DualSense Wireless Controller may be more practical than repeatedly changing PC adapters. Match the replacement to your console ecosystem and the games you use, and do not assume a new controller will solve a problem that affects every controller on the PC.

What not to do first

  • Do not immediately buy a new controller. A bad cable, stale pairing, driver, or USB port is often cheaper and easier to fix.
  • Do not disable every power-management feature. Change the Bluetooth adapter setting first and use controlled tests so you know what helped.
  • Do not buy a proprietary adapter for the wrong controller. The Xbox Wireless adapter is not for PlayStation or generic Bluetooth controllers.
  • Do not treat a charge-only cable as a wired test. It may supply power without carrying controller data.
  • Do not confuse a game-input problem with a disconnection. Confirm whether Windows has actually lost the device.
  • Do not interrupt a firmware update. Use a stable wired connection and keep the cable connected until the update finishes.

A practical decision tree

  1. Does it disconnect over USB? If yes, replace the cable, try a direct alternate port, remove the hub, update chipset and USB drivers, and inspect the controller socket. If no, continue.
  2. Does it disconnect only over Bluetooth? If yes, charge it, reduce interference, disable Bluetooth adapter power saving, reset pairing, restart Bluetooth Support Service, and update the radio driver.
  3. Is it an Xbox controller? Update it through Xbox Accessories. If Bluetooth remains unreliable but USB is stable, investigate a compatible Xbox Wireless adapter, taking its availability into account.
  4. Is it a DualSense? Update it with PlayStation Accessories over USB-C and use Sony’s reset procedure if pairing remains unreliable.
  5. Does another controller fail on the same PC? If yes, keep troubleshooting the PC. If no, test the original controller on another system and consider hardware service or replacement only if the failure follows it.

In most cases, the answer is not simply “Bluetooth is bad” or “the controller is broken.” The decisive evidence is whether the same controller is stable over a direct wired connection and whether another controller behaves normally on the same PC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a low controller battery cause disconnections from a PC?

Yes. A low battery can cause repeated wireless drops or make a controller appear to shut down. Fully charge it or replace the batteries before changing Windows settings. If it disconnects over USB with a good data cable as well, the battery is not the only likely cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will buying a newer Bluetooth adapter automatically fix the problem?

Not necessarily. A Bluetooth adapter can help when the PC’s built-in radio is weak, missing, poorly positioned, or unreliable, but it will not repair a bad cable, controller battery, damaged connector, or failing controller radio. Check drivers, power management, range, interference, and pairing first.

Does the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows work with a PlayStation controller?

No. The Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is designed for compatible Xbox Wireless Controllers. It is not a universal adapter for PlayStation or generic Bluetooth controllers, and availability should be checked because Microsoft’s current Store listing is marked unavailable.

Why does my controller disconnect only in one PC game?

If Windows still recognizes the controller but one game stops receiving input, check the game’s controller support, Steam Input, other remapping software, and the game’s per-controller profile. A single-game input failure does not prove that the USB or Bluetooth connection dropped.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with a charged controller and a direct USB data-cable test. A stable wired connection points to Bluetooth, interference, pairing, power management, or wireless firmware; instability over USB points to the cable, port, connector, drivers, or hardware. Re-pair the controller, disable Bluetooth adapter power saving, update PC and controller firmware, and use cross-device testing before buying an adapter or replacement controller.
