Why Does My Controller Not Work on Fortnite PC? Fixes That Work

A controller that does nothing in Fortnite on PC is often blocked by the "Ignore Controller Input" setting. Here is the order to check settings, drivers, connection and symptom-specific fixes.

In most cases, a controller that does nothing in Fortnite on PC is blocked by a single input setting. Turn off “Ignore Controller Input” first. If the controller still does not respond, the problem usually lies in whether Windows recognizes the device, its driver, or its connection. Epic Games Support’s guidance covers each of these, but it is written as troubleshooting steps rather than a diagnosis, so the fix depends on which of the checks below fails for your setup.

Start with the “Ignore Controller Input” setting

Fortnite has an option that tells the game to disregard controller input. If it is switched on, the game can appear to ignore a working controller. Epic’s support guidance says that when a controller is not getting a response, you should check your input settings first.

  1. Open Fortnite and go to the main menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Mouse and Keyboard.
  4. Find Ignore Controller Input and set it to Off.
  5. Return to the lobby or match and test the controller again.

Menu labels can change with Fortnite updates, so if the option is named differently or sits in another tab, look for the same wording in the input or controller sections.

Check whether Windows recognizes the controller

If the game ignores the controller even with the setting off, confirm that the computer sees the device at all. A controller that Windows does not detect will not work in any game, so this check separates a driver or connection problem from a Fortnite problem.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
  • Test in another app or game. If the controller does nothing anywhere on the PC, the issue is at the system level rather than in Fortnite.
  • Try a different USB port. Epic advises this when a device is not being recognized. Plug a wired controller directly into a port on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub where possible.
  • Update or reinstall the driver. Use Windows Update, or download the current driver from the controller manufacturer and follow its instructions. For third-party devices, Epic recommends getting drivers from the maker rather than relying on generic ones.
  • Confirm the connection type. Note whether you are using a cable, a wireless receiver, or Bluetooth. Each has different driver and pairing requirements, and the next section covers the wireless options.

Set up the controller configuration in Fortnite

When the controller is detected but the buttons do not behave as expected, the problem is usually the configuration rather than the connection. Fortnite stores controller layouts in its controller or gamepad settings.

  1. Open the main menu and go to Settings.
  2. Open the controller or gamepad settings.
  3. On PC, select the controller you are using in Controller Configuration.
  4. Choose a mapping preset: Old School, Quick Builder, Combat Pro, Builder Pro, or Custom.
  5. Apply the selection and test movement, aiming, and building before starting a match.

Presets are a good starting point if you are switching from a keyboard. Custom mapping is the option to use if a specific button needs to do something different from the presets.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Several symptoms look similar from the player’s side, but Epic’s support pages treat them as separate problems. Find the one that matches yours.

No response in Fortnite

Work through the Ignore Controller Input setting and the device checks above. If the controller is recognized by Windows but Fortnite still does not respond, the next step is to confirm the mapping in Controller Configuration.

Input lag or delayed response

Controllers that are recognized but feel slow usually have a connection or polling issue. Epic’s guidance includes these steps:

  • Update the controller driver through Windows Update or the manufacturer.
  • For a wireless controller, use its 2.4 GHz connection rather than Bluetooth, when the controller offers that option.
  • If the controller supports a configurable polling rate, raise it.

These steps address latency specifically. They are not a fix for a controller that is not detected at all.

Mouse and keyboard prompts appear while using a controller

If on-screen keyboard prompts keep appearing during controller play, Epic suggests turning off Windows’ On-Screen Keyboard. In Windows 11, the path is usually Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, then the on-screen keyboard toggle. If the keyboard is already off, switch it on and then off again. Accessibility labels can vary between Windows versions, so search the Settings app for “On-Screen Keyboard” if the path differs.

Controller stops working mid-game

Fortnite crashes at launch when a controller is connected

This is a separate problem from a controller that does nothing. Epic’s launch-crash guidance starts by disconnecting the controller and restarting the computer. If the error continues, its steps are:

  • Install pending Windows updates.
  • Verify the Fortnite game files.
  • Update your graphics drivers.
  • Reinstall Fortnite.

This page appears older than Epic’s other controller pages, so treat it as a sequence to try rather than a guaranteed fix. If you have not disconnected the controller yet, do that first, because it is the cheapest test.

Narrow down the cause before changing hardware

Most controller problems are resolved by settings and drivers. Before replacing anything, answer these questions:

  • Does Windows detect the controller when it is plugged in or paired?
  • Does the controller work in another game?
  • Which controller model is it, and is it wired, using a receiver, or using Bluetooth?
  • Does the problem happen on a new Fortnite launch or only after an update?

If the controller fails in every app after a driver update, a different port, and a clean reconnect, the hardware may be faulty. Epic’s documentation does not establish that buying a new controller will solve a settings, driver, or Fortnite bug, so do not assume replacement is the answer.

If replacement becomes necessary

When the existing controller is confirmed faulty, compare the points below before buying. Model-specific compatibility is not covered by Epic’s support pages, so check each product’s own listing.

Factor What to check
PC compatibility Whether the product states support for Windows PC and works with Fortnite on PC. Not stated by Epic’s support pages.
Wired or wireless A wired controller connects through a cable and usually avoids pairing issues. A wireless controller needs either a receiver or Bluetooth, depending on the model.
Separate receiver Whether the wireless option requires a dongle, and whether that dongle is included.
Cable and port The connector type, such as USB-A or USB-C, must match a free port on your computer.

Limits of this guidance

This article draws on Epic Games Support pages covering device recognition, input lag, mid-game input loss, keyboard prompts, controller configuration, and launch crashes. The steps have not been tested on specific controllers. Menu names and Windows accessibility labels change between versions, and driver options and wireless connections vary by controller model. If a step in this guide does not match what you see, follow the closest equivalent and check Epic’s current support pages.
