“Launching the game failed” is a generic Minecraft Launcher message. The heading alone does not identify the cause. Minecraft’s official troubleshooting guidance points to a short list of common causes: missing dependencies, signing in with the wrong Microsoft account, and a launcher installation that needs repair. The fastest route to a fix is to confirm which of these applies to your setup, using the full error text rather than the headline.
What the message does and does not tell you
The phrase is a catch-all shown when the Launcher cannot start the game. It appears across different failure types, so two people seeing the same heading may have different problems. Minecraft’s official launcher troubleshooting article lists missing dependencies and signing into the wrong Microsoft account among the common causes of launcher problems, and recommends reinstalling the launcher when those basics do not resolve the issue (Minecraft Help, “Troubleshooting Minecraft Launcher Issues”).
Because the headline is not specific, the practical first task is to capture everything the Launcher shows you.
Record the complete error before changing anything

- Your edition: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition
- The game version you tried to start, and whether it is a custom profile or a modded setup
- Your operating system and version
- How the Launcher was installed (Microsoft Store or the Minecraft download page)
These details decide which official support article applies. Without them, any specific fix is a guess. A community post on Reddit’s r/Minecraft that used this wording and mentioned “HTTP server does not seem to support byte ranges” could not be opened when checked, and it is no longer available to confirm its diagnosis. Treat that kind of detail as a sign that error text can vary, not as a fix.
Work through the basic checks in order
- Check for a launcher update. Minecraft states that the Launcher should update when it starts. On Windows, if it does not, open the Microsoft Store, select Library, and update Minecraft Launcher from there. Start the Launcher again after the update finishes.
- Confirm the account. The Launcher, the Microsoft Store app, and the Xbox app must all be signed in with the same Microsoft account, and that account must own a Minecraft license. Signing into a different account is one of the listed causes of this problem.
- Reinstall the launcher if the basics fail. Minecraft Help recommends uninstalling and reinstalling so that the necessary files are installed fresh. Before you remove anything, back up any worlds or data you want to keep. The official guidance does not establish that deleting game data is risk-free, so do not treat the uninstall as harmless for saved progress.
- Reinstall from an official source. Use the Microsoft Store or the Minecraft download page at minecraft.net/en-us/download. Avoid installers from unofficial sites.
- Match the error to a support article. Minecraft’s launcher support section lists separate resources for installation, updates, crashes, license errors, runtime errors, and other symptoms (Minecraft Launcher Support). Choose the one that matches your full error text.
Match the likely cause to the category
The table below groups the causes Minecraft’s official material names. Use it to decide which step to prioritise once you have the full error text.
Rank #2
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
| Likely category | Signs to look for | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Update or installation | The Launcher is out of date, or files appear incomplete after a failed update | Update through the Microsoft Store Library, then reinstall if needed |
| Account or license | The Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox apps show different accounts, or the account lacks a Minecraft license | Sign all three apps into the licensed Microsoft account |
| Runtime or dependency | The error references a missing component or dependency | Reinstall the launcher, then use the matching support article |
| Version or profile-specific | The failure occurs only with one game version, a custom profile, or mods | Test the default profile and version, then consult support with those details |
Minecraft’s official material does not say which category a given error code belongs to, so treat this table as a way to sort your own details rather than a diagnosis.
When the basic steps do not help
If the Launcher still will not start after the checks above, contact Minecraft Support and include the information you recorded earlier: the full error text, edition, game version, operating system, installation source, and whether you use mods or a custom profile. Those details let support direct you to the right article rather than repeating general steps.

What is not established
Official guidance for this message does not establish that a graphics card replacement, a separate Java download, an antivirus exception, a registry edit, or a third-party repair tool is needed. It also does not provide a frequency figure for how often this message has a particular cause. If you are considering any of those, confirm it against the matching official article first.
Launcher screens and support article titles change over time, so check the current Minecraft Help pages if the steps above do not match what you see.
