Minecraft skins can reset for different reasons, and the right fix depends on your edition, platform, skin type, and when it disappears. Check that you are using the intended account and that the skin is saved and equipped through the correct Java or Bedrock flow. If you use an imported Bedrock skin that reverts after a restart, compare your game version with Mojang’s reported version 26.40 issue.
Start by identifying what is resetting
Before changing settings, note four details: whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition, your platform and game version, where the skin came from, and what happened just before it changed. A Java skin upload, an imported Bedrock skin, a Character Creator character, and a Marketplace item do not all use the same flow.

If you play Bedrock Edition
Check that the character is saved and equipped
Open the Character Creator or Dressing Room and select the intended character. Minecraft’s skin guide says to back out of the Character Creator when finished; the character should then appear in the Dressing Room. The Character Creator FAQ says a profile can save up to five skins or created characters, and that players can change skins through the Character Creator menus, including imported custom skins.
Check the reported imported-skin issue
If an imported custom skin disappears specifically after restarting, compare your version with Mojang issue MCPE-241720, which reports imported custom skins failing to load after a restart and reverting to a default skin in version 26.40. This is a version-specific report, not evidence that every Bedrock reset has the same cause. Check the issue tracker’s current status and affected builds before deciding whether an update addresses it; do not assume a fix is available unless the tracker says so.

Verify Marketplace ownership and access
For a Marketplace skin or other Marketplace content, confirm that Bedrock is signed into the Xbox gamertag associated with the account that obtained it. Look in Marketplace > My Library and download or activate the item if needed. Minecraft notes that some content is tied to the acquiring account and that catalog or subscription limits can apply.
If you play Java Edition
Use the Java skin flow described in Minecraft’s official skin guide, and make sure you are signed into the Microsoft account and Java profile you intend to use. Minecraft distinguishes the Java in-game name, which belongs to the Java profile, from the Bedrock Xbox gamertag; checking the name alone may not establish that you are on the right account.

If the skin belonged to an older Java account and you now use a newly created account, there may be no recovery path: Minecraft says skins and capes tied to previous Java accounts are not recoverable on a new account after migration. Mojang’s account-migration period ended on December 18, 2023.
Refresh the Microsoft account connection
If the wrong account appears active, content is unavailable, or the reset happens around sign-in, sign out of Minecraft and sign back into the intended Microsoft account. Minecraft Help describes signing out and back in as a way to reset the connection to authentication servers for Marketplace, downloadable content, or other game services. Its sign-in guidance also recommends checking that the Microsoft account owns Minecraft and notes that signing into the Xbox app first may help with troubleshooting. These are ways to refresh account state, not proof that a session problem caused every skin reset.

Use the symptom to choose your next step
- It changes as soon as you leave the editor: Reopen the edition’s character or skin menu and confirm you completed its save or selection flow.
- An imported Bedrock skin disappears after restarting: Check whether your build matches the 26.40 report and review its current tracker status.
- A Marketplace item is missing: Check the active gamertag, then look in Marketplace > My Library.
- The reset follows signing in or switching platforms: Verify the Microsoft account, Xbox gamertag, or Java profile in use, then refresh the sign-in.
- An old Java skin is missing on a replacement account: Check whether it was tied to a previous Java account; Minecraft says those skins and capes cannot be recovered on a new account after migration.
If none of these matches, the useful details for narrowing it down are your edition, platform, exact game version, skin source, and the event that triggers the reset. The available official guidance does not establish one universal cause or a frequency for the problem.
