Why Does My Nintendo Switch Controller Keep Disconnecting? How to Diagnose and Fix It

A Switch controller that keeps disconnecting may have a low battery, a lost pairing, outdated software, wireless interference, a game-compatibility issue, or a hardware fault. Start by identifying whether the problem affects one controller or several—and whether it happens wirelessly, while attached, or only in one game. That comparison helps distinguish a controller problem from a console or environment problem.

First, identify what is actually happening

These steps mainly cover Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers used with Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Switch 2 menus or behavior may differ; do not assume every instruction below applies to it. If you use a third-party controller, follow its manufacturer’s pairing and reset instructions.

  • True disconnection: inputs stop and the controller loses connection or repeatedly reconnects.
  • Intermittent response: inputs lag or drop without a clear disconnect; interference may be involved.
  • Power loss: the controller switches off, particularly when its battery is low.
  • Game-specific behavior: the controller works in the HOME Menu or other games but not in one title. Check that title’s supported controllers, play modes, and player limit.
  • Input fault: the controller remains connected, but a button or stick does not respond correctly. That is not necessarily a wireless disconnection.

Also note which controller fails, whether it works while attached, and whether the issue occurs in the HOME Menu as well as in games. Nintendo describes repeated Joy-Con disconnections as interrupted wireless communication followed by the controller losing sync and reconnecting (Nintendo’s repeated-disconnection troubleshooting).

Try the quick checks first

  1. Charge the affected controller fully. A controller may pair with a low charge but still drop out during use. If it stops working after a predictable period, compare it with a fully charged controller before blaming the battery.
  2. Move closer to the console. Test with a clear path between controller and console.
  3. For Joy-Con on Switch or Switch OLED, remove the console from the dock while testing. The dock’s position may place the console near obstructions or wireless equipment; this does not establish that the dock itself is faulty.
  4. Put the console in the open. Avoid placing it behind a TV, under or inside metal, against a dense bundle of cables, or near an aquarium.
  5. Test from the HOME Menu. If the controller is stable there but fails in one game, check that game’s supported controller configuration and player limit.

Nintendo recommends checking charge and distance and avoiding obstructed placement or nearby equipment that can interfere with wireless communication (Nintendo’s Joy-Con wireless-response guidance).

Update the console, restart it, and update controllers

Install any available system update

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select System, then System Update.
  3. When the update is complete, restart the console: hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Restart.

Update controller firmware

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers and Sensors, then Update Controllers.
  3. Keep the controller charged and connected while the update runs.

If the controller update fails, confirm the console is up to date and restart it. Press the affected controller’s SYNC button once, press another button to turn it on again, then retry Update Controllers. If the update still will not complete, Nintendo’s guidance is to seek service rather than use unofficial firmware procedures. If the console is unresponsive, Nintendo’s update-failure guidance says to hold POWER for 12 seconds to force it off, then turn it on again (Nintendo’s controller-update troubleshooting).

Reset and reconnect the controller

Pressing SYNC once is a reset/reconnection step; it is not the same as holding the button to start pairing. After pressing SYNC once, press an ordinary button, such as A, to turn the controller on again. This does not erase games or save data (Nintendo’s controller connection guidance).

  • Eight RGB zones with four pre-set modes for dynamic lighting combinations

Re-pair a Joy-Con

  1. Detach the Joy-Con from the console.
  2. From the HOME Menu, open Controllers, then Change Grip/Order.
  3. Press the Joy-Con’s SYNC button once, then press an ordinary button on the controller.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and test it wirelessly in the HOME Menu.

If the Joy-Con works while attached but not wirelessly, this pairing test is especially useful. If it is not recognized even while attached, use Nintendo’s separate attached-controller troubleshooting rather than treating the issue as wireless-only. Nintendo’s pairing guidance also recommends checking charge, distance, pairing, and game support (Nintendo’s Joy-Con pairing troubleshooting).

Re-pair a Pro Controller

  1. Charge the controller or connect it to power. If available, connect it to the Switch dock with a USB charging cable.
  2. Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Grip/Order.
  3. Hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
  4. Wait for the player LEDs to illuminate and remain lit.

If pairing still fails, a full wireless-pairing reset is available: open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Disconnect Controllers, then hold X until the controllers disconnect. This clears wireless pairings for all controllers, not just the problem one, so you will need to pair the controllers you want to use again. Nintendo identifies its official Switch Pro Controller as model HAC-013; third-party models may use different procedures (Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing guidance).

Check for wireless interference

Wireless performance can be affected by distance, obstructions, and nearby equipment. Nintendo lists wireless speakers and headsets, access points, laptops and tablets, wireless printers, microwaves, cordless phones, and USB 3.0 devices—including external drives, flash drives, and LAN adapters—as possible sources of interference. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests keeping the console and controllers roughly three to four feet from other wireless devices where possible. Treat that as a troubleshooting recommendation, not a guaranteed cutoff; room layout and other conditions matter.

Move the console into the open and, if practical, temporarily switch off or move nearby devices. If the controller improves, that points toward the wireless environment but does not prove which device caused the problem. See Nintendo’s repeated-disconnection guidance and its wireless-response troubleshooting.

Use Airplane Mode as an isolation test for Joy-Con

  1. Open System Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
  2. Open the Airplane Mode submenu and turn Bluetooth back on.
  3. Press a button on each Joy-Con to reconnect, then observe whether the disconnections continue.

If the Joy-Con is more stable, other wireless activity becomes a stronger suspect. This is a diagnostic test, not proof of a specific cause or a permanent fix.

What happens in the comparison Most useful working diagnosis
One Joy-Con disconnects; another works normally The affected Joy-Con’s charge, firmware, or hardware is the leading suspect.
Both Joy-Con in one pair disconnect Check pairing, interference, and console software before assuming both controllers are faulty.
Multiple Joy-Con sets disconnect on the same console Investigate the console’s environment and software; console hardware may also need service.
Only a Pro Controller disconnects Check its charge, pairing, firmware, and wireless hardware.
Every controller disconnects Focus on console software, the console’s position and wireless environment, or console hardware.
The issue occurs only in one game Check game compatibility, supported play modes, player limits, and game-specific behavior.

For a Pro Controller problem that appears limited to one title, test it in another compatible game or software and check the title’s controller support (Nintendo’s Pro Controller troubleshooting). For Joy-Con, Nintendo recommends checking the game’s description, eShop information, packaging, or manual for supported play modes and player numbers (Nintendo’s Joy-Con pairing guidance).

When to contact Nintendo or the controller maker

  • One Joy-Con still fails: If it fails across the HOME Menu and multiple games after charging, updating, resetting, re-pairing, and testing another controller under the same conditions, the fault is more likely to follow that Joy-Con. Contact Nintendo service.
  • Several controllers fail on one console: The console or its environment may be involved. Nintendo’s repeated-disconnection guidance says service may be needed for the affected controllers and console.
  • Controller firmware will not update: If the console is updated and restarted and the retry procedure still fails, seek service.
  • Third-party controller: Use its manufacturer’s pairing, firmware, and reset instructions. Nintendo’s steps may not apply, and an adapter or receiver can add compatibility variables.

Nintendo’s service guidance distinguishes persistent problems with one controller from problems affecting multiple controllers (Nintendo’s repeated-disconnection troubleshooting). For service options, use Nintendo’s repair site; eligibility and any charges can vary.

Is a replacement controller justified?

Consider replacement only when the fault consistently follows one controller: it has been charged, updated, reset, and re-paired; it fails in the HOME Menu and more than one game; and another controller works normally on the same console under the same conditions. If several controllers disconnect on that console, buying another one may not solve the problem. A charging grip can make Joy-Con charging or use more convenient, but it does not repair a wireless, battery, pairing, or console fault.
