A long PlayStation update does not point to one cause by itself. The console may still be downloading, waiting on a retry, installing, or reporting a failed update. Check the current status and any error code first: a slow or unstable connection can interrupt delivery, while a stuck download or update-file problem needs a different fix. Sony does not publish a universal expected update time.
First, find out what the console is doing
Look at the update status before changing settings or restarting. A download that is progressing slowly is different from one that is stuck, and both differ from an installation in progress or an error message. Sony’s error-code index distinguishes conditions such as a slow or unstable connection from a download that is still ongoing. For example, PS4 error NP-31739-3 means the latest update file is still downloading; it does not, on its own, mean the file is corrupt.
- Downloading: The console is receiving the update. Network speed or stability may be a factor, but elapsed time alone cannot identify the cause.
- Stuck or failed download: Check the displayed error and use the console-specific retry instructions below.
- Installing: The download has moved to installation. Do not turn off a PS5 during installation; Sony warns that interrupting it can damage the console.
- Update-file error: Follow the instructions for that exact code rather than treating it as a slow connection.
Could your internet connection be slowing the update?
Yes. Sony describes PS5 error NP-102947-3 as: “The internet connection is too slow or unstable to perform the update.” That is a specific error description, not proof that every long update is caused by a home network. For PS5 error WS-116522-7, Sony recommends restarting the console and trying a wired connection if possible. If using Wi-Fi, move the console or router to improve placement, remove obstructions, and restart the modem and router. See Sony’s WS-116522-7 troubleshooting page.
These steps can help address a connection problem, but they do not guarantee a faster update. If the console gives a different error code, look up that code rather than assuming the same fix applies.

How to retry a stuck update on PS5
Sony’s PS5 system software instructions give this route for a stuck system software download:
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 control centre.
- Select the system software update and choose View Error Info.
- Choose Try Again.
If downloads fail repeatedly, Sony documents updating with a computer and USB drive. Use its official PS5 page for the current update file and exact instructions; the ordinary update file and the separate reinstallation file are not interchangeable.

How PS4 update recovery differs
PS4 uses its own menus, update package, and USB instructions. Sony’s PS4 system software page explains how to update through the console and how to use a USB storage device if needed. Do not use PS5 files or folder instructions on a PS4, or vice versa.
Sony documents USB storage formatted as FAT32 or exFAT for manual updating. Follow the folder names and file name on the support page for your console generation, and download the update only from Sony. A USB drive is an optional workaround after download trouble, not a way to make an internet download faster.

When to contact PlayStation Support
If retrying does not resolve the problem, use Sony’s guidance for the exact error code or contact PlayStation Support. Avoid treating a full system software reinstallation as a routine fix for a slow download: Sony warns that reinstalling PS5 system software deletes console data. Do not interrupt an installation in progress.
