Oscar helps the player escape the Undead Asylum and tells them about the undead pilgrimage. But Dark Souls never explains why Oscar himself is in the Asylum or how he got there. His purpose in starting the player’s journey is clear; his personal reason for being imprisoned is not.
What does Oscar do at the Undead Asylum?
Oscar, the Knight of Astora, sets the player’s escape in motion by sending down a corpse with the cell key. The player later finds him gravely wounded. If the player hears his story, Oscar gives them the Estus Flask and shares a saying passed down by his family: “In thine exodus from the Undead Asylum, maketh pilgrimage to the land of Ancient Lords…” The dialogue and character reference identifies the speaker as Oscar and presents the saying as guidance for the player’s journey.

Why does Oscar help the player?
His family’s saying offers a reason to set out: an undead person who leaves the Asylum should make a pilgrimage. The wider lore connects that pilgrimage to the Bells of Awakening, giving the player’s journey a destination and purpose. Oscar’s words explain the quest he urges the player to undertake; they do not explain his own route to the Asylum. The lore reference provides the broader Bell and pilgrimage context.
How did Oscar get into the Asylum?
The cited character reference does not establish why Oscar was in the Asylum, how he entered it, or whether he had a specific plan for the player before their meeting. The game shows his actions and gives his family’s saying, but it leaves his own arrival unexplained.

Was Oscar deliberately releasing undead?
One lore reference suggests Oscar may have intentionally released undead in the hope that one would ring the Bells of Awakening. That is an inference, not a confirmed explanation in the game. Treat it as a possible interpretation of his actions, not settled canon. The character reference presents the idea as implied rather than definitively established.
