Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA “No USB” warning on the original PlayStation VR usually means the PS4 is not detecting the USB data connection to the PS VR processor unit. The connection to check first is PS4 USB port → USB data cable → rear USB port on the PS VR processor unit.
Reconnect that cable, try the other PS4 USB port, test a known-good data cable, and power-cycle the system before replacing the headset or resetting the console.
What the “No USB” warning means
Original PS VR does not connect to the PS4 through one headset cable alone. Its processor unit sits between the console, television, and headset. Sony’s setup guide specifies a USB connection from the processor unit to a front USB port on the PS4, alongside separate HDMI, power, headset, and Camera connections. See the official PS VR quick-start guide.

In practical terms, “No USB” generally indicates that the PS4 and processor unit have not completed the required USB data connection. It is not necessarily reporting a problem with the USB connection inside the headset. This is a troubleshooting interpretation rather than a formal Sony error-code definition.

The most common causes are an incorrectly connected cable, a damaged or charge-only cable, a faulty PS4 USB port, a processor-unit problem, a damaged headset cable, or mismatched PS VR hardware revisions.
First, confirm that you have original PS VR
“PS4 VR” normally means the first-generation PlayStation VR system. PS VR2 is a different product designed for PS5 and does not use the original PS VR processor-unit arrangement. Do not mix PS VR2 setup instructions with this troubleshooting process.
Also check whether your headset and processor unit belong to the same original PS VR revision:
- CUH-ZVR1: processor unit with a sliding cover; serial number commonly begins with P01 or P02; headset power button is on the inline remote.
- CUH-ZVR2: solid processor unit; serial number commonly begins with P03; headset power button is on the underside of the scope.
Sony warns that a CUH-ZVR1 headset will not work with a CUH-ZVR2 processor unit. This is especially important when assembling a system from used or separately purchased parts. Use Sony’s PS VR setup and identification guide to verify the revision before buying replacement parts.
Quickest fixes to try first
- Turn off the PS4 completely, not just Rest Mode. Turn off the headset and processor unit.
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect the USB cable at both ends.
- Connect the cable to the rear USB port on the processor unit and a front USB port on the PS4.
- Try the other front USB port on the PS4.
- Remove USB hubs, extension cables, and adapters while testing.
- Try a short, known-good USB cable that supports data transfer.
- Inspect the plugs and sockets for looseness, bent contacts, fraying, crushed insulation, or severe kinks.
Do not force a connector. A loose socket or plug that changes the warning when moved may indicate physical damage.
Could the USB cable be the problem?
Yes. A cable can deliver power while failing to carry reliable data. A charge-only cable, a cable with damaged data conductors, or a cable with an intermittent connection may allow the processor unit or headset to illuminate while the PS4 still reports “No USB.”

Use a known-good, data-capable cable of the correct connector type. Do not choose solely by color or branding, and do not assume that every micro-USB cable is suitable. The important factors are data capability, physical fit, condition, and compatibility with your equipment.
If the warning disappears with the replacement cable, the original cable was the likely cause. If nothing changes, continue testing rather than immediately buying a headset.

Plug another USB device, such as a controller or storage device, into each PS4 port.
| Result | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Other devices fail in one port | That PS4 port may be dirty, worn, or damaged. |
| Other devices work, but PS VR fails in both ports | Suspect the cable, processor unit, headset cable, or a revision mismatch. |
| PS VR works in only one port | The other PS4 port may be unreliable. |
Never insert metal tools, liquid, or abrasive material into a PS4 or processor-unit port. If you clean a port, do so cautiously and without damaging the contacts.
Perform a complete power cycle
This is a safe diagnostic cold boot, not a guaranteed processor-unit reset:
- Shut down the PS4 completely.
- Switch off the headset and processor unit.
- Unplug the PS4 and processor unit from wall power for several minutes.
- Reconnect the processor-unit power adapter directly to a working outlet.
- Reconnect the USB cable directly between the processor unit and PS4.
- Reconnect the HDMI and headset cables.
- Turn on the PS4, then turn on the PS VR headset.
A cold start can clear a bad startup state and give the USB handshake another opportunity to occur. It will not repair a defective cable, port, or processor unit.

Check processor-unit power and the headset cable
Make sure the processor unit’s power adapter is connected securely and that the unit shows its normal indicator response. If there is no light, beep, headset response, or other activity, the problem may be power delivery or processor-unit failure rather than USB detection alone.
The headset connection cable is separate from the PS4-to-processor USB cable. Reseat it and inspect it for cuts, crushed sections, sharp bends, twisting, or a loose connector. Damage to this cable can cause a black screen, intermittent display, headset detection problems, or other warnings even when the PS4 USB link is working.
Do not confuse these connections:
- PS4 ↔ processor unit USB: the connection most directly associated with “No USB.”
- PS4 ↔ processor unit HDMI: carries video from the console.
- Processor unit ↔ TV HDMI: carries passthrough video to the television.
- Processor unit ↔ headset: the VR connection cable.
- PS4 ↔ Camera: used for tracking.
- Processor-unit power: supplies power to the processor unit.
Sony describes the headset cable arrangement in its PlayStation VR FAQ.
Could HDMI or the Camera be responsible?
HDMI problems usually cause no TV passthrough, no headset picture, or a black screen. They do not normally explain a standalone “No USB” warning, although several warnings can appear when the processor unit or multiple cables are incorrectly connected.

The PlayStation Camera is required for tracking and many PS VR functions, but it is not the cable that establishes the USB link between the PS4 and processor unit. The Camera connects directly to the PS4. Check it separately if USB detection is restored but tracking fails, the PS4 asks for the Camera, or movement is not detected.
If you are using original PS VR with a PS5
Original PS VR can be used with a PS5 only with the original PS4 PlayStation Camera and the required PlayStation Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with original PS VR. PS5 wiring and accessories differ from the PS4 arrangement, so follow Sony’s current compatibility guidance rather than applying PS4 instructions unchanged.

Use this diagnosis table
| Test result | Most likely explanation |
|---|---|
| No light or response from the processor unit | Power adapter, outlet, or processor-unit failure. |
| The warning disappears with another cable | The original USB cable failed or was not data-capable. |
| Other USB devices fail in one PS4 port | That PS4 port is damaged or unreliable. |
| Both PS4 ports fail with multiple known-good cables | Processor unit, compatibility, headset cable, or headset fault. |
| Headset and processor unit are different revisions | Hardware mismatch; replace with a matching component. |
| USB works but the screen is black | HDMI, headset cable, processor video path, or display issue. |
| USB works but tracking fails | Camera connection, placement, or tracking/software issue. |
| The problem appears after moving the headset | Possible headset cable or connector damage. |
These are likelihoods, not proof. More than one cable or component can fail at the same time.
When to replace a part
Replace the USB cable first when
- The processor unit powers on.
- Other devices work in the PS4’s USB ports.
- The cable is old, visibly damaged, loose, or advertised only for charging.
- The warning changes when the cable is moved.
This is usually the least expensive and least invasive test.
Recommended Free Tools
Suspect the PS4 when
- Controllers or storage devices also fail in the same port.
- A port is physically loose or damaged.
- Multiple USB accessories have connectivity problems.
Suspect the processor unit when
- It has no normal power response.
- Both PS4 ports fail with multiple known-good data cables.
- A compatible headset and cable also fail with that processor unit.
Be especially cautious with used replacements
A replacement processor unit must match the headset revision. Before buying, verify the CUH-ZVR1 or CUH-ZVR2 model, included power supply, cable compatibility, testing evidence, and return policy. If several parts are missing or faulty, a complete tested bundle may be more practical than buying components separately. Availability of original PS VR parts and official repairs varies by country and product age, so check your regional PlayStation Support site.
What not to do
- Do not factory-reset or initialize the PS4 as an early fix. It can erase data and will not repair a cable, port, or processor unit.
- Do not use a USB hub or extension while diagnosing the connection.
- Do not force connectors or clean ports with metal objects or liquids.
- Do not assume that a charging cable supports data.
- Do not mix CUH-ZVR1 and CUH-ZVR2 components.
- Do not buy a replacement headset before testing the cable, PS4 ports, processor-unit power, and hardware revision.
Software checks come last
After the physical checks, restart the PS4 and install available system updates through the normal Settings menu. If the system reaches the relevant device settings, original PS VR options are generally found under Settings > Devices > PlayStation VR; labels can vary by system language and software version. Sony documents this area in its PS VR FAQ.
Software checks are reasonable after the cable and hardware path has been tested, but a factory reset is disproportionate for a USB-detection symptom.
