If your Xbox controller turns off, first check whether it has actually lost power or is still on but disconnected. For a dark controller, try fresh, correctly installed batteries or charge its rechargeable pack; for one that stays lit, troubleshoot pairing and the wireless connection. Then test with a compatible cable and check firmware or, on Windows, Bluetooth settings.
Is the controller turning off or disconnecting?
Watch the Xbox button light when the problem happens. If it goes dark, start with power. If it stays lit or flashes while the controls stop responding, the controller may have lost its connection instead. This is a useful diagnostic distinction, not a guaranteed diagnosis: either symptom can have more than one cause.

Check batteries, charging and the cable
For AA batteries
Try a known-good fresh pair and check that they are installed with the polarity shown in the battery compartment. Xbox’s Xbox One controller troubleshooting guidance recommends checking battery condition and correct insertion; it supports AA batteries as well as rechargeable batteries from the Xbox One Play & Charge Kit.

For a rechargeable pack
Charge the pack and make sure its cable is seated firmly at both ends. If it continues to lose power, try a known-good compatible power source or battery option, if available, to help distinguish a depleted or failing pack from a controller fault. Check compatibility with your controller model before replacing a pack.

Try wired operation
A compatible wired connection can help separate a power or wireless problem from a broader controller fault. Xbox’s Xbox One guidance says a micro-USB cable or Play & Charge Kit cable can connect that controller without batteries. Connector types differ by controller generation, so identify your exact model before choosing a cable; do not assume a micro-USB cable fits a newer controller.
If it stays on, troubleshoot the connection
- Re-pair the controller. Follow the pairing procedure for your Xbox console or host device. If the controller is powered but no longer responds, pairing is a sensible first connection check.
- Test without the headset. If disconnections happen while using a wired headset, unplug it temporarily and see whether the symptom changes. Xbox Wire’s April 3, 2024 Alpha Preview release notes described controller firmware fixes for unexpected disconnections when using a wired headset. That was a specific preview update, not evidence that headsets generally cause disconnects or that the preview firmware is the current public release.
- Reduce possible wireless interference. As a diagnostic experiment, move nearby wireless devices away and test again. A change may point to a connection condition, but does not prove interference was the cause.
Check controller firmware
Check for an available controller update through Xbox Accessories or the console’s accessories settings. Xbox Wire’s April 3, 2024 Alpha Preview notes say an update could be installed manually through Xbox Accessories; they do not establish that the preview build is the latest general-release firmware. Use the update offered for your device rather than relying on an old preview version.

If you use Bluetooth on a Windows PC
These steps apply to a controller that remains powered but drops its Bluetooth connection. They do not explain a controller that has actually lost power. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for power-saving issues, temporary glitches and driver problems. Work through these checks:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Check Battery Saver or Energy Saver settings.
- In Device Manager, check the Bluetooth device’s power-management settings and disable the option that lets Windows turn it off to save power, if present.
- Restart Bluetooth Support Service.
- Check for an updated Bluetooth driver.
Menu labels and available options can vary by Windows version and device. These are host-side Bluetooth checks, not fixes for worn batteries or a controller that shuts down while wired.

When to suspect hardware
If the controller still fails with known-good power and a compatible wired connection, and the connection checks and available updates have not helped, stop treating batteries or wireless pairing as the likely fix. Inspect the controller for damage and check warranty or Xbox support options before attempting a repair. If you use a repair guide or order parts, identify the exact controller model first; parts and procedures are not interchangeable across every generation.
Third-party troubleshooting pages also suggest checking console idle-shutoff settings, but the exact current menu path varies and is not established here. Verify the setting in current Xbox guidance for your console generation rather than following an unconfirmed path.
