The timing of the shutdown is the most useful clue, so start by matching when it happens to the likely cause in the table below. Menus and power options differ between console models and software versions, so the steps here note where those differences matter.
Match the timing to the likely cause
Note exactly when the console powers off. Whether it happens during a game, after a quiet period, or when the TV changes state tells you where to look first. None of these patterns proves a diagnosis on its own, but they narrow the order of checks.

Step 1: Check the power options
Start here because it is the quickest check and the one most likely to explain an idle-time shutdown. Xbox documents the route as Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options.
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system.
- Select Settings, then General, then Power options.
- Review the idle or auto-shutdown setting. If the console turns off at the same interval you see on the screen, the setting is the likely cause.
Power mode names have changed across software updates, so use the labels your console displays rather than older names from guides. If the shutdown follows the idle timer, lengthen the interval or turn the auto-shutdown option off, then watch the console over several days of normal use. If it still turns off unexpectedly without matching the timer, move on.

Step 2: Test HDMI-CEC (Series X|S)
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire post on the October 2022 update describes HDMI-CEC on Series X|S as a feature that lets commands pass between the console and compatible connected devices. This step applies only to Series X|S. Confirm the feature and its menu location on older Xbox One models before following it there.
This is a troubleshooting test, not a documented fix. If the shutdowns line up with TV or receiver activity, temporarily disable the power-control side of HDMI-CEC on both sides of the connection:

- Find the HDMI-CEC option in the console’s settings. Its location varies by software version, so look for it in the display and TV settings area on your console.
- Turn off HDMI-CEC power control on the console.
- Turn off the equivalent CEC or device-link setting on the TV or receiver. Brands use different names for this feature, so check that device’s manual.
- Use the console normally for several days. If the shutdowns stop, the connected device was sending power commands, and you can decide whether to keep the feature off or troubleshoot the device’s settings.
Step 3: Clear the ventilation and placement
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X + S manual states: “Do not block any ventilation openings on the console.” The same instructions warn against placing the console on a soft surface that can block openings, or in a confined space without adequate ventilation. Microsoft’s service guidance for Xbox Series X explains that the fan cools internal components, which is why airflow matters.
- Place the console in a firm, open position with clear space around the vents.
- Keep it away from heat sources such as radiators, heaters, and direct sunlight.
- Do not open the enclosure as an initial troubleshooting step.
Good airflow is a sensible precaution, not a confirmed explanation. A console that turns off does not prove it is overheating, so use placement as one check among several.

Step 4: Inspect the power cord and connection
- Make sure the AC cord is firmly seated at both the console and the wall outlet or power strip.
- Look for visible damage, fraying, or loose fittings on the cord and power brick.
- Microsoft’s manual recommends genuine Microsoft power units and AC cords.
A cord or connection fault can cause sudden shutdowns, but a replacement cord is not a fix for every shutdown. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that a new cord resolves an internal power supply problem. If you do replace the cord, confirm it is compatible with your specific console model before buying.
Step 5: Install system updates
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X service guidance recommends checking for updates before attempting any hardware repair. Microsoft Support’s guide to Xbox One system updates explains how to check for available updates and how automatic updating works. Install any pending update, then run the console for a few days to see whether the shutdowns continue.

When the shutdown continues
If the console still turns off after the steps above, contact Microsoft support. Before you call or start a support request, write down:
- Your console model (Xbox One, One S, One X, Series S, or Series X) and the model number on the label.
- The times and situations in which the shutdown occurs.
- Your idle power setting, and whether HDMI-CEC was on or off during the test.
- The condition of the power cord and the placement of the console.
Microsoft’s service guidance does not provide one repair procedure that applies to every generation or failure, so support staff will need these details to choose the next step.

What this guide cannot confirm
