In Roblox Experience chat, hashtags in place of a word or phrase mean Roblox’s filter blocked it. Roblox says filtering is intended to keep inappropriate content and personally identifying information from being visible. The hashtags do not reveal which specific rule triggered the filter.
What can make a message appear as hashtags?
Roblox lists several possible reasons a message may be filtered, including profanity, personal identifying information, bullying or harassment terms, and text the system does not recognize. A message might contain an address or phone number, for example, rather than profanity. These are possible triggers, not a way to identify what happened to any particular message. Roblox’s User Data FAQ describes these examples.
Roblox’s safety information also describes filters for discriminatory speech, extremism, violence, sexual content, personal information, and instructions to move a conversation off-platform. It says messages with profanity may sometimes be automatically rephrased into a safe and civil message rather than simply displayed unchanged. Roblox’s chat, privacy, and filtering guidance explains these protections.
Does a hashtagged message mean Roblox thinks you broke a rule?
It means the filter blocked the word or phrase; it does not, by itself, explain why. Roblox does not identify the specific trigger through the hashtags alone. Avoid assuming the message was blocked for profanity: personal information, other safety categories, or unrecognized text can also be involved.

Why can chat filtering or access differ between players?
Roblox says communication features and safety settings vary by age. Access can also depend on an age check, account communication settings, and region. The available controls and eligibility rules can change, so consult Roblox’s current age-check guidance and chat help page for current requirements. The Experience Chat help page also explains controls for who can chat and notes parental-consent requirements for some age groups.
Does trusted-friend chat remove hashtags in games?
No. Roblox describes reduced filtering for certain trusted-friend text chats, subject to age and eligibility, but says standard filters remain active in Experience chat. Trusted-friend chat is a separate communication context; enabling it does not turn off filtering in a game. See Roblox’s guidance on voice chat with friends and unfiltered texting and unlocking trusted friends.
