Entering Frisk at the fallen human naming prompt in Undertale switches on a short, optional Hard Mode. Enemy encounters become considerably tougher and some dialogue changes, but the mode ends after the Toriel battle at the end of the Ruins, so the extra difficulty is confined to the game’s opening stretch.
What happens when you type Frisk
The game asks for the fallen human’s name at the start. Most names simply personalize the story. Typing Frisk, however, is a special case: it activates Hard Mode. The prompt makes this clear before you commit, with the warning: “WARNING: This name will make your life hell. Proceed anyway?”

That warning is a literal description of what follows. It is not a sign that the whole game is set to a permanently higher difficulty.
How the Hard Mode changes the game
Community-maintained Undertale Wiki pages describe two changes:
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing the Nintendo Switch, an indie game that has recorded the huge hit around the world
- Explore the world of RPG with fun characters in Henteko Whether you defeat or miss your opponents, it's all up to you
- Can the child of carrot fall into the underground world where monsters live with Or will you be trapped forever
- Enemy encounters are described as much harder than in a standard run.
- Some dialogue is altered to reflect the name choice.
The available documentation describes the difficulty qualitatively. It does not give damage values, enemy counts, or a percentage increase, so any claim about exactly how much harder the fights are would go beyond what is documented.
Where Hard Mode ends
The mode is short. It ends after the Toriel battle at the end of the Ruins. Once that fight is over, the game does not keep the harder encounters for the rest of the run.
Rank #2
- In collaboration with Panic and House House, iam8bit is proud to release Untitled Goose Game "in a box," packed with exclusive collectible goodies:
- Physical Edition of the Game
- The Spring/Summer Plaza Catalog, a 24-page mail-order style circular
- 11" x 17" Village Map Poster
- Premium “No Goose" Sticker
So how hard is it in practice?
The honest answer to “How hard does naming yourself Frisk make the game?” is that it is harder during the opening Ruins section and roughly normal for the rest of a full playthrough. If you want the challenge, the Ruins are where you will feel it. If you are playing a standard run, use a different name.
Source and confidence
The trigger, the warning text, and the endpoint come from community wiki documentation of the naming prompt. I did not find an official developer statement describing the mechanic, and the wiki description of the difficulty is not a measured comparison. Details can also vary between platforms and game versions, so if you are checking a specific release, test the Ruins section directly.
