Morph is a slide-to-slide transition, not an animation applied to an individual object. The checks below apply to PowerPoint; other apps with a feature called Morph may work differently.
First, identify what “not working” means
There are two different problems to separate: Morph may be missing from the Transitions options, or it may be available but fail to animate the change you expected. Also note whether the problem affects one presentation or every presentation. Those details help narrow the cause; the title alone cannot identify a specific installation problem.
Record your PowerPoint edition, version and build, operating system, file format, and—if you use PowerPoint for the web—where the file is stored. Microsoft’s current Morph support and availability guidance distinguishes which versions can create Morph from those that can only play it. In particular, PowerPoint 2016 playback depends on specified installation, build, and update conditions. For PowerPoint for the web, Microsoft 365 subscribers need the presentation stored in OneDrive for work or school or SharePoint in Microsoft 365. Check the current compatibility table rather than assuming every edition or platform has the same capabilities.
Build the transition with two slides and a shared object
Morph is applied to the destination slide and creates movement from one slide to the next. A basic setup needs two successive slides with at least one object in common. Microsoft Support describes the easiest setup as duplicating the slide and moving the object on the second slide.

- Create the starting slide, then duplicate it.
- On the duplicate, move, resize, rotate, or otherwise change the object you want to appear to move.
- Select the second slide in the thumbnail pane. Morph belongs on this destination slide, not the first slide or on the object itself.
- Choose Transitions > Morph, then preview the transition.
If the slides have no shared object, or you applied Morph to the wrong slide, the result may look like a normal transition rather than the movement you expected. Microsoft’s setup guidance explains the shared-object requirement: Use the Morph transition in PowerPoint.
Check whether the object type can morph
Morph does not interpolate every object type or shape in the same way. Microsoft says charts do not morph. Its guidance also describes limitations for geometric shapes, including shapes with more than one hole; editable shapes should have roughly corresponding edit points and the same orientation. If a chart or complex custom shape is the element that appears stuck or changes abruptly, try the transition with a simpler shared object to distinguish an object limitation from a broader setup problem.

Force a match when automatic matching is wrong
When PowerPoint does not pair two objects as intended, Microsoft’s Morph tips describe a naming convention that can force a match: give both objects the same name beginning with !!, such as !!Circle. The objects should be the same type, and that name should identify the intended one-to-one pair on each slide. An object whose name begins with !! will not match an object that lacks the prefix. Use a product-specific explanation for other Morph features
“Morph” is also used by unrelated software. For example, an Articulate Storyline community discussion concerns “Morph not working with standard states.” An Articulate staff response there says Storyline’s Morph transition applies to base object properties, not built-in states and layers. That is a Storyline-specific explanation, not a PowerPoint fix; consult the documentation or support community for the particular app you are using: Articulate community discussion.

A Microsoft Q&A thread dated October 16, 2024, describes a Mac user whose Morph stopped working after a PowerPoint update while older presentations continued to work. That report is anecdotal: it does not establish a widespread bug or a universal fix. Respondents suggested checking for updates and investigating the installation, but those suggestions are not a diagnosis for other users. The thread is available at Microsoft Q&A.
