Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSKSE crashes are often caused by a mismatch between the Skyrim runtime, SKSE build, or an SKSE plugin—but the crash may also come from another mod or from Skyrim itself. Start by noting when the crash happens and what changed, then check compatibility and isolate one component at a time. Don’t assume the “Special Edition” or “Anniversary Edition” label alone identifies a compatible build.
First, identify when the crash happens
The crash timing and the last change to your setup help narrow down what to check. Note whether it happens before the game window opens, during startup, while loading a save, or later during play. Also note whether the problem began after a Skyrim update, an SKSE change, or the addition of a mod or plugin. These clues help direct troubleshooting; none proves a cause on its own.

- Before the game opens or during startup: check the SKSE installation, game runtime, and any SKSE plugin messages.
- While loading a save or during play: test whether the issue follows a particular mod, plugin, or save.
- After an update or installation: verify the changed component’s requirements before changing anything else.
Check Skyrim, SKSE, and plugin compatibility
SKSE expands scripting capabilities used by many Skyrim mods, but installing SKSE does not make every mod or native plugin compatible. Compatibility depends on the exact game runtime and the requirements of SKSE and each installed SKSE plugin. Steam’s SKSE listing describes the tool; consult the current SKSE and plugin documentation for your installation rather than choosing a build from an edition label alone.
- Record your Skyrim edition, storefront, and executable/runtime version.
- Check which SKSE build is installed and compare its stated requirements with that runtime.
- List the installed SKSE DLL plugins and check each one’s documentation for support for your exact runtime and edition.
- Read startup messages and available logs for failed or incompatible plugins. Treat these as clues about which component to verify, not proof that every other component is compatible.
The SKSE64 Nexus page describes compatibility reporting for plugins affected by Address Library changes and notes that SKSE may report plugin errors. Use any message you see to identify what to investigate; the page does not establish that a particular current plugin release supports your runtime.

Check how SKSE is installed and launched
If you use the Steam version, Steam’s SKSE listing says SKSE should be installed in the same Steam library as Skyrim. It also says the Steam overlay must be enabled for Steam integration. If you prefer to run without the overlay, the listing says to start Skyrim by launching skse_loader. These are installation and launch details, not universal crash fixes. Check the Steam listing for its instructions.
Isolate mods and plugins without changing everything at once
Before testing, back up your saves and preserve your mod list. Bethesda warns that modded play can cause issues and recommends keeping unmodded saves available to revert to. If you recently added a mod, Bethesda specifically recommends uninstalling it and reloading to see whether the crash is related. Bethesda’s mod-crash guidance explains this approach.

- Temporarily disable or remove mods as a diagnostic, keeping a record of what you changed.
- Repeat the same launch or save-loading action that caused the crash.
- If it works, restore components in a controlled way and test after each change until the crash returns.
- If it still crashes, continue checking the game and SKSE installation rather than concluding that a specific mod is responsible.
For a mod installed immediately before the problem began, test that mod on its own first. Avoid changing several plugins or installing a compatibility mod at the same time: doing so makes it harder to tell which change mattered.
Do not treat Backported Extended ESL Support as a general crash repair. Its repository describes a specific SKSE plugin for ESL-range support across named versions and says its diagnostic log lists relevant plugins. It is relevant only if that specific function matches your setup and problem. See the project’s stated purpose and documentation before considering it.

If Skyrim still crashes without mods, troubleshoot the game
A crash can have a cause outside SKSE. If the game continues to crash with mods removed, follow Bethesda’s general PC troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming an SKSE component is at fault. Bethesda recommends checking that the PC meets the game’s requirements and closing additional background programs, then updating graphics drivers, resetting auto-detected video settings, and lowering graphics options if needed. See Bethesda’s PC crash guidance. These steps address Skyrim crashes generally; they do not diagnose SKSE specifically.

- The crash started after a Skyrim update: check whether SKSE and every installed SKSE plugin document support for the new runtime. Bethesda cautions that mods may not work properly after an update until their creators update them. Bethesda’s mod-crash guidance.
- The crash started after an SKSE or plugin change: compare that component’s requirements with your recorded runtime and inspect its error messages or logs.
- The crash appears only with a particular mod or plugin enabled: verify that component’s requirements and test it separately, changing one thing at a time.
- The game crashes with mods removed: use Bethesda’s general PC troubleshooting steps and check the game installation and system requirements.
A pattern narrows the investigation but does not prove the cause. A useful test is reversible: you can disable one component, repeat the same action, and restore the previous setup without risking a save.
