Escape from Tarkov players were angry because the $250 Unheard Edition, launched in 2024, bundled a co-op PvE mode with persistent progression, and many owners of the older $150 Edge of Darkness edition believed they were already entitled to that mode. Battlestate Games answered that the new mode was a feature of the new edition, not DLC. Critics also objected to the price and to gameplay advantages packaged with the edition. Battlestate later committed to free PvE access for Edge of Darkness owners, and a 2026 retrospective reports that the access became permanent for all of them.
What the two editions offered
The dispute only makes sense when the two packages are compared side by side. The table below uses the launch-era terms as reported by PC Gamer and GameSpot in 2024.
| Item | Edge of Darkness | The Unheard Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Launch price (reported 2024) | $150; no longer sold | $250 |
| Co-op PvE mode with persistent progression | Not part of the original package; owners argued it should be covered | Included. Progress is not reset by the game’s wipes |
| Promise made to buyers | “Free access to all subsequent DLCs,” according to contemporaneous coverage | Not applicable as a promise; sold as the new edition |
| Gameplay and convenience perks | Not stated in the reporting this article draws on | Expanded pocket space, increased stash, starting skills and other advantages that critics called pay-to-win |
The core conflict is therefore narrow: a $150 buyer had been told future DLC was included, and a $250 buyer received a mode that the older buyer had assumed would count as that DLC.
The promise and the DLC argument
Most of the anger came from one question: does a new persistent PvE mode count as “subsequent DLC”? Battlestate said no, and the company’s reasoning was about classification rather than the original sales wording.

Battlestate’s position
Lead community manager appl3z0r, quoted by PC Gamer from the official Escape from Tarkov Discord, wrote: “It ain’t DLC, it’s [a] unique feature of the new edition.” In the same coverage he said “DLC means additional content” and “PvE is a feature and a game mode.” CEO Nikita Buyanov, in an official statement reproduced by a community tracker, described the company’s understanding of DLC as major themed additions released after the game’s official release.
That is Battlestate’s classification of its own product. It is not an independent ruling on what the Edge of Darkness sales promise meant, and no court or regulator has ruled on the question.

Why owners read it differently
Owners of the $150 edition read “all subsequent DLCs” as covering any significant new content sold after their purchase, and a mode that was new, exclusive to a more expensive package, and tied to progression looked like exactly the kind of addition they had been promised. The company’s narrower definition of DLC gave the same mode a different label, and that gap between the wording of the promise and the company’s definition was what drove the complaint.
Price and perks: the pay-to-win criticism
Access was not the only complaint. Critics objected to the $250 price itself, which was unusually high for an edition of a game that was already sold. They also pointed to a set of advantages that came with the package: expanded pocket space, an increased stash, starting skills and other benefits. Priority matchmaking drew the most criticism in coverage of the launch.

Calling these advantages “pay-to-win” is the view of critics, not an uncontested fact. The developer’s position was that the perks were not a gameplay problem in the way the critics described, and the 2026 changes described below were framed by the developer in that same way.
How Battlestate responded, step by step
The response came in three stages, and each should be read separately because the later outcome differs from the first announcement.

- Initial position (2024 launch): Battlestate said PvE was a feature and game mode of the new edition, not DLC, which left Edge of Darkness owners without the access they expected.
- April 2024 capacity-based promise: The company said Edge of Darkness owners would receive PvE for free at full release, once its server infrastructure had enough capacity. It also described temporary early access and a possible separate early-access purchase. This was a conditional plan, not a guaranteed date.
- Later outcome (reported in 2026): A 2026 GamesRadar retrospective reports that the final result was permanent free PvE access for every Edge of Darkness owner. This is the outcome as reported in that retrospective, and it is a separate fact from the 2024 announcement.
What changed in 2026
Edition perks have continued to change. On May 19, 2026, Battlestate published an edition update that added edition-based raid XP bonuses and a group XP bonus for the Unheard Edition. The company stated that these additions would “not affect gameplay during the raid in any way.” That is the developer’s characterization, and it addresses only the raid mechanics described in the announcement.
The same announcement included a 25% discount on Unheard purchases and upgrades that ended on May 20, 2026. That offer has expired and should not be treated as current.

What the controversy does and does not establish
- Scale of anger is not measured. No independent statistic on how many players were upset was verified. PC Gamer reported that the Unheard trailer had about 31,000 dislikes against 5,200 likes at the time of its publication. That is a dated snapshot from one platform, not a measure of player sentiment.
- The DLC question is unresolved in law. No primary legal or consumer-protection ruling settled whether the original promise covered the PvE mode.
- The final access outcome is reported, not independently audited. The permanent-access result rests on the 2026 GamesRadar retrospective and differs from the conditional April 2024 plan.
The lasting lesson is that the argument was less about a single mode than about how a publisher defines the content it has already promised. Battlestate’s narrower definition resolved the company’s position, but the eventual decision to grant permanent PvE access to every Edge of Darkness owner shows that the buyers’ reading of the original promise was taken seriously in practice.
