SEGA describes his body as shining gold, but its official profile does not give a separate scientific or in-universe explanation for the color.
What causes Sonic to transform?
SEGA’s official Super Sonic profile says Sonic transforms after receiving the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds. It describes the resulting form as far more powerful than ordinary Sonic, able to fly, and shining gold.
So the Emeralds are the stated source of the transformation, while gold is the stated appearance of the transformed form. The profile does not explain how the Emeralds produce that color; claims about a biological, pigment-based, or other mechanism go beyond what this source establishes.
Is Super Sonic yellow or gold?
People commonly call the color yellow, but SEGA’s profile describes Super Sonic as shining gold. “Yellow” is a reasonable everyday description of what players see; “gold” is the wording in SEGA’s character description.

How do you transform into Super Sonic in the classic games?
SEGA’s Sonic Origins manual documents the mechanic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. In those games, collecting all the Emeralds unlocks the ability to transform. With at least 50 Rings, jump while airborne to activate Super Sonic.
This explains how the transformation works in those game examples, not why SEGA chose gold for the design.

Does Super Sonic stay transformed?
No. SEGA says the form consumes energy heavily and can be maintained only for a short time. The transformation is powerful, but it is not described as permanent.
