Spoiler warning: this article covers the late-game reveal and the ending.
The Gommage happens because Renoir is gradually erasing the Canvas. The Paintress, Aline, is not the one causing it. Lumière’s people believe she is, and the game builds its early mystery around that belief. Spoiler guides describe the ending as overturning it, with Aline’s painting and actions bound up in resisting Renoir.

What Lumière believes for most of the story
Early in the game, the explanation the people of Lumière accept is simple. Every year the Paintress paints a number on the Monolith. Everyone who has reached that age is erased in the Gommage, a event that turns people to smoke and fades them away. The number counts down each year, so the surviving population faces an age limit that keeps moving closer.

The official game description states the premise directly: everyone “past that age turns to smoke and fades away.” Creative director Guillaume Broche gave the same framing in a PlayStation Blog developer interview:

“For years, the Paintress has painted a number on her monolith and erased everyone of that age in an event known as the Gommage, and each year a new Expedition ventures out to try to destroy her and stop the cursed cycle.”
That belief is the engine of the opening. It explains why Lumière sends an Expedition each year: if the Paintress is the source, destroying her should end the Gommage. The premise is what the characters act on, and the game presents it as their understanding rather than the full truth.

What the ending reveals
The late-game reveal reframes the whole cycle. According to spoiler guides, the real cause of the Gommage is Renoir, who appears in the Canvas as the Curator. Aline, the Paintress, is depicted as trying to resist or delay him rather than carrying out the erasures on her own.
That shift matters because it changes the question. The Paintress is not the simple antagonist the Expeditions assume her to be. Her painting of the number is tied to a struggle over the painted world, not a free-standing decree that kills people on its own.
Rank #3
Renoir as the Curator
Renoir is presented as the force erasing the Canvas. Guides identify him with the Curator figure that appears in the Canvas, which is why the reveal is best understood as a change of culprit rather than a new mechanic layered on top of the original premise.
Aline’s role
Aline is the Paintress. Under the reveal, her actions are about resisting Renoir. The belief that she is the cause is the misunderstanding the ending corrects, and it is the reason the Expeditions have been aimed at the wrong target.
Rank #4
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a ground-breaking turn-based RPG with unique real-time mechanics, making battles more immersive and addictive than ever.
- Explore a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France in which you battle devastating enemies.
The Canvas and the Dessendre family
The story ties this conflict to the painted world and to the grief and struggle of the Dessendre family over the Canvas. That family dimension is what links the cosmic cycle of the Gommage to the characters’ personal history, so the explanation is not only a mechanical answer but a family conflict.

What is and is not confirmed
- Confirmed by official material: the in-world premise of a painted yearly number, the Gommage as an erasure of people who reach that age, and the Expeditions sent to stop the Paintress. The official game description and the PlayStation developer interview establish these.
- Reported by spoiler guides: that Renoir, as the Curator, is the true cause and that Aline is resisting him. These are secondary summaries of the ending, not quotations from an official script or primary endgame source.
- Not established here: further precise mechanics or motives behind Renoir’s erasure of the Canvas. Treat any additional detail beyond the summary above as unverified unless it comes from an official source.
